"Which distance should I even run — 800, 1500, 5000 or 10,000 meters?" The honest answer: it depends less on your fitness than on your energy-system profile — and that you can actually test.
Even though all five distances feel like "endurance," your body works completely differently in each. At 800 meters, the aerobic system supplies roughly 60–67% of the energy, the rest comes anaerobically — from fast-available but limited energy sources that don't need oxygen. At 1500 meters that ratio shifts to roughly 80–84% aerobic. From 5000 meters up you're at around 95% aerobic — base endurance takes over almost entirely, a bit like the difference between sprinting for a bus and a relaxed walk with the occasional jog.
That explains why an excellent 800m runner isn't automatically a good 10,000m runner, and vice versa. The 800 meters need a strong anaerobic engine AND an aerobic base; the 10,000 meters need almost purely a massive aerobic base plus tactical smarts on top.

Roughly 60–67% aerobic, the rest anaerobic — that makes the 800 meters possibly the most brutal distance on the program. Start too fast and you collapse hard in the final 200 meters; too cautious and you give the race away. If you combine explosive power with solid endurance, this is your home turf.
At roughly 80–84% aerobic, the "metric mile" is a compromise between speed and endurance. Tactical nuance often decides here — timing your move counts almost as much as raw base speed.
At roughly 95% aerobic from 5000 meters up, base endurance almost completely dominates. Whoever succeeds here has usually built a massive aerobic base over months — raw speed alone isn't enough.

Run an 800m time trial and a longer continuous run a few days apart. Do you feel more alive during the short, hard pace or the long, even run? That's a first clue — but confirm it over several months of training.
The shorter the distance, the higher the anaerobic share — and the more important a thorough warm-up, because you're near your limit from the first second. At 800 meters, a cold start into race pace is riskier than at a 10,000-meter race with a gentler build-in.
Build your training volume for the longer distances slowly — the aerobic base that 5000 and 10,000 meters need develops over months, not single hard weeks.
After every hard race, ask yourself honestly: in the second half, did you want more speed or more air? The former points to a shorter distance, the latter to a longer one. This simple feeling is often a better distance compass than any training time.
A trick many experienced coaches use: let athletes deliberately run several distances in their first training year instead of pinning them down early. A 16-year-old's engine still changes a lot.
