Your plant works — but how does it become real height? Swing-up, turn and clearance: the underrated middle of every vault.
"My plant works, but I still can't get high — what's going on?" Almost every pole vault coach hears this question eventually. The honest answer: usually it's not the plant, it's the swing-up — the phase between takeoff and the bar that gets the least applause but transfers the most energy.
When the pole hits the box, it bends dramatically and stores your approach energy like a compressed spring. The crucial point many beginners miss: that energy doesn't come back on its own. You have to actively add to it — by pulling, swinging and extending while the pole straightens back out.
That's exactly where many training plans go wrong: the takeoff gets the attention, the bar gets the glory — but the swing-up in between decides how much of your approach speed actually turns into height. Upper and lower body work as a team here: the legs deliver power in the approach and takeoff, while the upper body and core steer and amplify the upward swing.
The swing-up converts your horizontal speed into vertical lift. Your legs actively swing up and forward while the pole keeps bending — at this point you're hanging almost upside down on the pole, head lower than your feet.
The most common mistake is passivity: just hanging on the pole and waiting. Instead you actively pull with your arms, swing with your core, and extend as the pole relaxes. Each of these three movements adds extra muscle power on top of the pole's stored energy.
As the pole extends back, you rotate your body: from the upside-down hanging position into an upright one, back to the bar. This rotation doesn't happen abruptly — it flows smoothly out of the momentum from the previous phase.
At the highest point you push off the pole and release it while rotating and extending over the bar. Letting go too early costs height, too late knocks the bar off.
Strength training improves raw power for this phase, but without the right sequence — pull, swing, extend, turn — a lot of energy goes unused. That's why good training plans deliberately combine weight room, gymnastics and sport-specific drills.
The swing-up happens high above the box — exactly why you first practice it at a lower grip and shorter approach, where mistakes mean less falling distance. Only raise grip and approach once swing-up and turn stay clean even under fatigue.
Have your coach demonstrate every new movement variation on the ground or with aids first, before you try it on a full jump — the air is the wrong place for the first repetition of a new technique.
During video analysis, deliberately time exactly when you start pulling, swinging and extending — many vaulters believe they do it earlier than the video shows. The gap between feel and reality is often bigger here than in any other phase.
