The honest answer first: a poor landing easily costs you 20 to 30 centimeters — more than most athletes gain through months of sprint training. The landing is the most underrated part of the long jump because after the spectacular takeoff and flight, it often feels like a formality. It isn't.
The basic principle: your jump distance is measured to the nearest imprint in the sand — fall backward and that rear imprint counts, no matter how far forward your feet touched down. The technique therefore revolves around two things at once: getting the legs as far forward as possible, while not tipping backward.
That happens through the hips: they must be actively pushed forward toward the touchdown point. As the legs bend on contact with the sand, the hips slide into exactly the gap the feet left in the sand — so the hips don't leave their own, further-back imprint. At the same time: neither land on the heel (it brakes you) nor on the toes (too little stability for the force) — instead bring the heels as far forward as possible along the flight path without tipping backward.
Just before touchdown, extend both legs as far forward as possible, heels leading. Extending too late means the feet land closer to the body — and closer to the board, not further away.
At the moment of touchdown, the hips are key: consciously push them toward the feet's touchdown point. That's the difference between a landing that shows your full jump distance and one that gives away centimeters.
On ground contact, the knees bend in a controlled way — your chest moves toward your knees at this moment. Stiff, straight legs on landing only raise the risk of tipping backward.
Swing the arms forward and down just before landing, upper body leaning slightly forward too. This pulls your center of mass past your feet and actively fights falling backward.
Practice the landing position separately: from a short approach or even standing with a small jump into the pit. That way you get the timing for leg extension and hip drive without approach stress distorting the movement.
The landing is the moment with the highest fall risk in long jump — the ankle is the most common injury region for long jumpers, at around 23% of all injuries. Controlled knee bending on contact protects not just your distance but also your joints: stiff, locked legs on impact clearly raise sprain risk.
Practice new landing techniques first at reduced speed and in a well-maintained, evenly loosened sand pit. Hard, compacted spots in the sand are an underrated injury source.
Think of the landing not as "touching down" but as "driving through": your whole body keeps moving forward at that moment instead of stopping at one point. Athletes who remember this one cue noticeably lose fewer centimeters to falling backward.
