The question every new pair, four or eight rower asks eventually: how do eight people manage to pull at exactly the same moment without looking at each other? The answer: they really don't look at each other - instead the whole crew follows a single person.
That person is the stroke. They set the rhythm and stroke rate that everyone else follows for placing and lifting their oars. Every rower ahead of them orients on the back of the rower directly in front - a chain of sightlines that ultimately starts at the stroke. No calling out needed, just pure timing.
Commands, on the other hand, come from a different place: in a boat with a coxswain, they usually give them - "and go", "power ten", "sprint now". Without a cox, like in the coxless four (4-), the stroke or bowman usually takes the foot rudder while the bowman calls out course instructions. Two systems, one goal: keeping the crew synchronized and on course.
And how fast does this actually run? At the start, top-level races sometimes see stroke rates above 45 strokes per minute - more than one full stroke cycle per second. After that the crew settles into a race pace of around 34 to 38 SPM - roughly as fast as your arms swing when you're walking briskly, only with the combined power of eight people behind it.

Synchrony ultimately comes down to trust more than technique: you have to trust that the stroke hits the right tempo and that the crew ahead of you follows cleanly. That trust grows through shared training time, not individual perfection.
Especially at high stroke rates around or above 45 SPM, there's barely time to correct a missed catch - that raises the risk of catching a crab. Train pace increases gradually, not as a sudden jump.
Clear, short commands are also a safety tool: an unambiguous "hold" or "stop" must be understood and executed by the entire crew instantly, without questions asked. Practice emergency commands just as much as race commands.
Train the sightline chain deliberately on calm water at low pace before testing it at race speed. Whoever has internalized the chain slowly won't lose it under stress either.
A trick experienced crews use: the stroke deliberately varies the pace slightly in training without announcing it - that way the whole crew learns to truly follow, instead of relying on a memorized tempo.
