How to rotate both sculls at the exact same instant, why timing is harder in sculling than in sweep rowing, and which drills actually help.
Why is timing so much more demanding in sculling than in sweep rowing? The honest answer: because in sweep you only rotate one wrist, while with two sculls you rotate two — and both have to happen at the exact same instant. That rotation is called feathering: a 90-degree turn of the scull around its own long axis that lets the blade glide flat over the water between strokes.
The sequence is fixed: first tap down — your hands drop, the blade comes out of the water vertically —, then feather, then hands away to start the recovery. The blade must be fully feathered before your hands leave your body. With a single sweep oar, that's a movement of one hand. In sculling, both hands have to run through this sequence at the same time and in sync — otherwise one blade rotates earlier than the other, and you lose exactly the stability that two symmetrically handled blades are supposed to give you.

Say the three steps out loud or in your head at first while you row. That sounds trivial, but it pulls the movement out of autopilot and puts it under conscious control.
Feathering happens through a light roll in your fingers, not by yanking your wrists up and down. Consciously focus on both hands performing the roll at exactly the same pace.
Row a few strokes with a deliberately delayed feather and notice how it affects stability and blade handling. The contrast makes the correct timing much more noticeable afterward.
Row an S-shape in the water by alternately pulling harder on one side. This trains not just boat control but forces you to consciously perceive the timing of both sculls separately.
Hold the blade at 45 degrees for a few seconds, with the lower edge skimming just above the water, before completing the feather. This trains your feel for the exact rotation angle instead of rushing past it.
Don't run the drills as a permanent state, but as short, targeted blocks within a normal training session. Five to ten minutes of deliberate timing work per session is usually enough to carry the effect noticeably into your regular rowing pace.
Practice all drills on calm water with no boat traffic — especially the snake drill, since it deliberately deviates from a straight line. Let other rowers on the water know before you run unusual movement patterns. Stop a drill the moment waves or oncoming traffic appear, and only return to it once conditions calm back down.
Deliberately reduce your stroke rate to a minimum for all timing drills. Timing comes before power — at high speed you're more likely to paper over synchronization errors than to actually fix them. Only ramp the pace back up once the drills feel completely stable at low rate, rather than speeding up early out of impatience.
