Trapeze harness instead of foul-weather gear, fixed vest instead of auto-inflate: the gear you need for dinghy sailing and how to match your boat.
The short answer: on a dinghy you need less technology, but different priorities than on a yacht. No radar, no chartplotter, no thick cabin jacket — instead, gear that protects you when you regularly end up in the water. Because that's the difference: a dinghy expects you to capsize, and your gear has to expect it too.
The most important and most underestimated point first: auto-inflating life jackets don't belong on a dinghy. They're built for yachts and motorboats, where you rarely end up underwater or under the boat. On a dinghy, an auto-inflating vest can snag on the sail or rigging while capsizing, before it even opens — sailing schools and federations consistently recommend the fixed foam vest instead, which already floats before you go under.
The second difference is clothing: instead of foul-weather gear that keeps you dry, you wear wetsuit neoprene or a drysuit that keeps you warm once you get wet — not if, but when. And the third big difference: your dinghy has to match your body weight, or it either sits too low in the water or you can't keep it flat in wind.

Buy or borrow a fixed foam vest to an EN standard, not an auto-inflating one. It must sit tight enough that it doesn't slide over your head when you capsize, but loose enough that you can move freely. Test the fit by raising your arms overhead — the vest shouldn't ride up to your chin.
With water above roughly 18–20°C, a neoprene shorty is enough. Below that, and especially in early spring or autumn, you need a drysuit — on a dinghy you get wet more often and for longer than on a yacht, because capsizing and spray are everyday occurrences, not exceptions.
Every dinghy class has a target weight window: an Optimist is built for kids around 40 to 50 kg, a single-hander like the ILCA 4 (formerly Laser 4.7) for around 50–66 kg, an ILCA 6 for 60–75 kg. If your dinghy has a trapeze: the harness must sit so the hook is level with your belly button — too high and you hang crooked, too low and you load your back instead of your legs. Try it on land before you hook in on the water for the first time.
Almost every modern dinghy has self-bailers that push water out of the hull once the boat is moving. Check before every sail that they're open and not clogged — otherwise water flows in instead of out after a capsize.
The fixed life jacket is the single most important gear decision you make — even before the boat itself. Don't buy a used vest without checking its buoyancy: foam loses lift over the years, even when it looks intact from the outside.
Wear cold protection even when the air is warm. The water determines how fast you cool down, not the air temperature — and in spring the gap between the two is often at its widest.
Before buying, borrow at least two different boat classes for a day each. A boat that matches your weight on paper can still feel wrong — hull shape, rig type and what your club actually offers matter just as much as the number on the scale.
