Where hiking out demands pure leg strength, on the trapeze a steel wire from the masthead carries your weight, letting you stand further out than any leg length would allow.

Instead of holding with your legs, you hang from the trapeze wire, which runs from the mast to the hook on your harness. Your body weight becomes a pure counterweight against the wind in the sail — with noticeably more leverage than hiking out, because you can stand further out and lower.
With enough wind for a close-hauled or reaching course: hook the trapeze ring onto your harness hook while still sitting on the gunwale. Lean back slowly and let the wire take your weight before you put your front foot on the rail — the back foot follows.
Straighten your front leg fully, keep the rear one slightly bent — that stops the wire's pull from dragging you forward. Feet stand shoulder-width or a bit wider apart, for stability in waves and gusts.
The most common beginner mistake is sitting up in the harness and holding onto the handle instead of lying stretched out. The handle is only for hooking in and out, not for holding on while sailing — lay your body as straight as possible, in a line from the mast to your feet.
In waves and chop, a lower position — called "low trapezing" — helps, with your body closer to a right angle to the mast: it dampens the boat's rolling more and converts lateral energy into forward drive more efficiently than a high, stretched-out position. Advanced sailors switch between high and low position depending on conditions.
Practice hooking in and out first in light wind and close to shore — a snagged trapeze hook during a capsize is unpleasant, though rarely dangerous. Wear non-slip shoes, the wet gunwale is the most common tripping hazard while stepping in and out.
As on any dinghy outing: fixed life jacket, moderate wind for the first attempts, an experienced partner on board.
Practice the basic position first on land, on the boat trailer or propped up at the club, before trying it on the water. That way you feel how the leg extension should work without also having to manage wind, waves and the boat at the same time.
