How much chain actually has to go in the water for your anchor to really hold? The honest answer: noticeably more than the water depth alone suggests. The ratio of chain paid out to water depth is called scope — and a rough standard rule is 7:1: at 5 meters of depth, that's around 35 meters of chain.
That number isn't dogma, it's a scale depending on conditions: 3:1 is at most enough for a short lunch stop in calm weather with someone aboard, never overnight. 5:1 works for a calm overnight with good holding ground and little wind on all-chain rode. 7:1 is the proven standard in moderate weather. 10:1 you need in strong wind, difficult holding ground, or when a blow is forecast. Britain's Royal Yachting Association recommends at least four times the water depth as a minimum for all-chain rode.
The reason for so much chain: a flat pull angle presses the anchor into the seabed instead of ripping it out. Too little chain and the pull gets too steep — the anchor breaks free, often exactly when you can least afford it.
Look for a sheltered spot, sufficient depth and enough swinging room — the circle your boat pivots through around the anchor when wind or current shifts. Never anchor too close to a neighboring boat whose swinging circle overlaps yours.
Add water depth plus freeboard height (distance from water to bow roller) and multiply by your target scope. At 6 meters depth plus 1 meter freeboard and standard 7:1 scope, that's 49 meters of chain.
Motor slowly into the wind, drop the anchor in a controlled way — not in a heap — then reverse slowly as the chain pays out. Finish with a gentle astern pull under power so the anchor digs into the bottom.
