Tuck position, line choice and drafting: how to ride aerodynamically in a downhill race, hold your speed and gain positions.
The honest answer first: in a downhill race, you don't win through more courage, but through less air resistance. On an even slope, a few percentage points of aerodynamics make the difference between the podium and the midfield — technique beats adrenaline here.
The foundation is the tuck position: front foot on the front truck with toes pointing forward, back foot behind it on its toes, both knees bent about 90 degrees, the back knee pressed against the front calf, upper body nearly horizontal with the chest on the front thigh. Three variants have become established in the scene: the American tuck (both feet flat, back as horizontal as possible), the somewhat lower European tuck (back foot on its toes, back knee resting on the front ankle), and the especially low Brazilian tuck with arms extended forward.
The records show what that's worth: Kyle Wester hit 130.63 km/h in 2016 with optimized leg work, and Pete Connolly topped that in 2017 with 146.73 km/h — both well beyond any highway speed limit. In everyday racing you're realistically looking at 80 to 105 km/h — already faster than a fast country road.
Practice the posture first standing, without riding — front-foot position, knee angle, back posture. Your muscles (mainly thighs and lower back) need to hold the position for minutes, not just seconds.
Race tracks rarely have one continuous ideal line — you alternate between tuck (holding speed), upright riding (turns, visibility), and air brake (shedding speed). Practice these transitions smoothly, without losing balance.
On unfamiliar sections, the right line matters more than maximum speed — the shortest, cleanest path through a turn saves more time than any extra meter spent in the tuck. Walk or ride new tracks slowly first to learn the line and surface.
In pack racing you use drafting: you ride directly behind another rider who breaks the wind for you, saving energy or gaining speed for a passing attempt. That requires trust in yourself and the rider ahead — spacing and reaction time have to be right.
Increase your personal race pace only gradually and on familiar terrain — every new track, every new setup demands fresh, careful acclimatization, regardless of the level you've already reached.
Downhill race speeds sit in a range where falls disproportionately often cause serious head and skull injuries — never ride without a full-face helmet and complete protective gear, regardless of experience level.
