Fly over the coping instead of just grinding it: how to build your first air, grab the board safely, and land under control.
The honest answer first: an air is basically an ollie that carries you past the coping — you leave the ramp completely airborne for a moment instead of grinding along the edge. That moment of free flight is what sets park & vert apart from street most clearly.
The landing is the critical part. On a normal flat-ground ollie landing, the impact force already reaches roughly 4.7 times your body weight — comparable to a short, hard jump off a ledge. On an air from greater height, you land into the sloped wall instead of flat ground, which spreads that force over a longer distance instead of concentrating it in one point.
The classic beginner grab is the indy grab — the back hand reaches between your feet to the toe-side edge of the deck. It dates back to the late 1970s and remains the building block for nearly every other grab variation in vert.
Before you grab, practice the air with no grab at all. Approach the coping with speed, ollie right before the edge, keep the board under control with your feet, and land back in the transition.

A well-fitted skate helmet clearly lowers this risk, but it never replaces controlled progression in height.
Important: a helmet that's already taken a hard hit loses part of its protective capacity and should be replaced — "still looks fine" isn't a good enough test.
Film your first airs from the side. Almost everyone underestimates how little height that first air actually has — from your own point of view, every centimeter feels higher than it is. The video removes the pressure and shows you honestly where you actually stand. Also deliberately compare your own landing position with experienced riders on the same ramp — often the difference isn't height at all, just how deeply the knees bend on touchdown.
