The data is unambiguous: in a study on skateboarding injury risk among adolescents, 25.7% of all injuries occurred explicitly at gaps or stairs — jumps with a height difference between takeoff and landing surface. And these injuries aren't trivial: 54.2% of all cases in the same study were classified as severe, with more than 21 days of recovery time. For comparison: even a normal ollie landing loads your legs with roughly 4.7 times body weight — on a botched stair set, forward speed stacks on top of fall height, and the forces scale accordingly.
That doesn't mean stay away. It means progression isn't a nice-to-have, it's the only serious method. Start at three steps before you attempt eight, and you don't just cut risk — you build the technique that makes bigger sets work in the first place. That's exactly why one simple rule applies at this level: you earn height, you don't just take it.
Start at two to three steps, scale up set by set, not session by session. Jumping from three steps to ten isn't progression, it's gambling.
Walk or roll the landing zone before your first attempt. Cracks, gravel or unevenness that barely register on flat ground become a fall trigger after a jump with height difference.
Measure the distance to takeoff multiple times before you approach it with speed. A takeoff too early or too late shifts the entire flight arc and thus the landing point.
Pull your knees toward your body, keep the board under you, instead of pushing the flight phase to its limit. The more compact your position, the more controlled the landing.
