The honest answer first: all four alpine racing disciplines go down the same kind of slope – but they demand almost opposite technique, gear and nerve. If you've ever watched World Cup racing and thought "this all looks the same," this guide is for you.
At one end sits slalom: the most technical and slowest discipline, with gates set so close together that men navigate between 55 and 75 and women between 40 and 60 gates over a vertical drop of just 140 to 220 meters – roughly the height of a 50-story building, but with constant, tight direction changes instead of a straight run. At the other end sits downhill: the longest and fastest discipline, with a vertical drop of up to 1,100 meters for men – more than double the height of Germany's tallest building – and average speeds close to 100 km/h.
Between them sit two more worlds: giant slalom with up to 60 gates over 250 to 450 meters of course, where you carry speed across several gates instead of resetting at each one. And super-G, a speed discipline between giant slalom and downhill, where racers get just one single run with no prior training on the course – only one inspection, then the first attempt is the only one that counts.
This structure – two technical disciplines (slalom, giant slalom), two speed disciplines (super-G, downhill) – also explains why racers are rarely equally strong across all four.
Slalom has the densest gate sequence of all four disciplines: 55 to 75 gates for men, 40 to 60 for women, over a vertical drop of just 140 to 220 meters. Giant slalom courses have up to 60 gates but over a much longer course of 250 to 450 meters, with more distance between gates than in slalom. The goal shifts: instead of reacting fresh at every gate, it's about carrying speed across several gates at once.
Super-G sits between giant slalom and downhill: gate spacing is at least 25 meters, vertical drop ranges between 400 and 650 meters for men. The key difference from every other discipline: there are no training runs on the actual course, only a prior inspection – the first real run is also the only one.
Downhill has the largest vertical drop of all disciplines – up to 1,100 meters for men, 500 to 800 for women – combined with the fewest gates, around 35. Racers reach average speeds close to 100 km/h, with just one single run per race.
The tight direction changes in slalom demand short, agile skis (radius roughly 10–13 m), while giant slalom skis at 16 meters and up are built for long, carrying arcs [see the ski types guide]. Super-G and downhill skis are longer and more stable still, because at that speed, stability matters more than agility.
The disciplines described here are competition formats for trained racers under controlled conditions with nets, medical support and a closed course – not a format to replicate on an open piste. The high speeds, especially in super-G and downhill, are a serious risk on an open run without that safety infrastructure.
Next time you watch a World Cup race, pay attention to gate color and gate spacing instead of just the clock – giant slalom gates alternate red and blue and sit noticeably farther apart than in slalom. That makes the difference between disciplines visible at a glance, even without a commentator.
