From 180 to 360: how rotations are named in freestyle skiing, what a cork is, and why trampoline training helps you learn.
"How do I even start spinning?" With the smallest rotation there is: the 180. Half a circle, landing backward (switch) — that's the building block every bigger spin is built on.
The naming follows simple logic that helps you make sense of competitions or videos: a 360 ("the 3") is one full rotation, landing forward again. A 540 ("the 5") is one full rotation plus an extra half turn, so you land switch. A 720 ("the 7") is two complete rotations — the number directly tells you how many hundred degrees you're rotating in the air.
Important for later: once a spin no longer runs purely around the vertical body axis but is additionally tilted off-axis, freestylers call it a "cork" — an off-axis, tilted rotation. The definition is stricter than many think: in a cork, your feet must never be above your head at any point — that clearly separates a cork from a true flip, and it's why corks count as "just" advanced, while true flips rank as the discipline's elite category.
For getting started, none of that matters yet — what counts first is pure timing and spotting. Your head and gaze initiate the rotation, the body follows. And because failed attempts in the air can end painfully fast, many freestylers first train new spins on a trampoline and airbag — there, you can experience the rotation feel in slow motion before snow even enters the picture.
Turn your head and shoulders toward the direction you want to rotate before the skis even leave the ground. Your gaze initiates the turn — body and skis follow almost automatically.
On a 180, you land backward. Practice this landing separately before worrying about the full rotation — landing switch is its own skill.
Only once the 180 is reliable, add the second half-turn. The timing barely changes, only the rotation speed needs to increase slightly.
Before trying a new spin on a real kicker, practice it somewhere a sloppy landing doesn't hurt. The feel for the timing transfers almost one-to-one onto snow.
360 = one full rotation, 540 = one full plus a half, 720 = two full rotations. That way you instantly understand what other riders or commentators are talking about.
Rotations increase the risk of losing orientation in the air, especially on early attempts. So train new spins first on smaller features or, if available, in the airbag — a sloppy landing there is harmless, whereas at a kicker it can easily hurt. Take deliberate breaks between attempts so you're genuinely focused on every new approach.
Say the rotation out loud before every attempt — "180, land switch" — before you approach. That sounds trivial, but it locks your brain onto the plan and stops you from getting unsure in the air and bailing on the rotation.
