The honest answer first: waxing isn't an optional extra for advanced skiers, it's the second half of your equipment. On classic waxable skis, the right wax decides whether you move forward or just slip in place.
Two wax types handle different jobs: grip wax goes on the kick zone and provides traction for push-off, glide wax goes on the glide zones and makes the ski fast. Skating skis only need glide wax – with no kick zone, grip wax is completely unnecessary, a practical advantage over classic technique.
For grip wax, there's a clear rule of thumb: hard wax for cold, dry conditions below roughly −1 °C, klister (a sticky paste) for warmer, wet, or already thawing snow. Wax too warm for the snow lets you slip; wax too cold doesn't grip at all – snow temperature decides, not air temperature alone.
