Why do experienced ski tourers often start in the dark with a headlamp in spring? Honest answer: because the best corn-snow descent has a narrow time window, and if you leave too late you miss it entirely — or worse, ski into a slope that's turning unstable right as you get there. Trip planning is therefore not just about "which route," but above all "when."
The reason lies in the physics of the snowpack. After a cold, clear night, a stable melt-freeze crust forms — a load-bearing, frozen layer at the surface. But that crust is only a few centimeters thick and gets lost again as the day warms up. Especially steep east, southeast and south-facing slopes can become heavily saturated with water in under an hour in spring, and avalanche danger then rises drastically. So the rule is: you have to cross steep, sun-exposed slopes before the crust softens — not after.
Good trip planning means treating weather, snowpack and time of day as one connected system, not three separate checklist items. If you only plan the route and ignore the clock, you've only done half the job.
The best chance at grippy corn snow usually falls between mid-morning and early afternoon — on south-facing slopes the window often starts mid-morning and ends in the early afternoon. Work backward from that point: ascent time plus break plus safety buffer gives you your start time.
In spring that often means: setting off still in the dark with a headlamp, to cross steep, sun-exposed sections before they soften. That's not a sign of excessive ambition, it's the logical consequence of snowpack physics.
Steep east, southeast and south-facing slopes can become heavily saturated with water in less than an hour. Watch for signs along the way: snow getting sticky under your skis, small roller balls sliding off on their own, the crust giving way under your weight. These are signals to adjust your route immediately.
Plan not just your ascent time, but also when you want to be back below the critical slope at the latest. A time buffer of 30 to 60 minutes absorbs delays from breaks, trail-breaking in deep snow, or a change in weather.
Apps with slope-angle layers and weather forecasts help enormously with desk-based planning — but they don't replace on-the-spot observation. The snowpack reacts differently locally than any app can predict from afar.
Time of day is its own risk factor in spring, and it must be taken just as seriously as slope angle. Crossing a steep, sun-exposed slope at the wrong hour risks a wet-snow avalanche — regardless of how safe that same slope was early in the morning. Stick strictly to your planned return time for critical sections, even if the summit is still tempting.
Keep two times in your head before you set off: your planned arrival at the summit, and the latest possible time to safely cross a critical, sun-exposed section. If you reach that second time and haven't made it through yet, that's your personal turn-around signal — no matter how close the summit still looks.
