Toggle, front riser, rear riser or harness — what do you actually turn with? All three techniques, from flat turn to the 45° flare turn.
Toggles, risers, or body — what does a canopy pilot actually turn with? The honest answer: all three, but never randomly. Each of the three techniques has its own purpose, its own speed and its own risk — and telling these three apart is the core of everything you learn about steering in canopy piloting.
Toggle turns work through differential braking: one side gets more drag, the other essentially "out-flies" it. Done correctly, a canopy can turn 180° in under a second this way — about as long as it takes to say "one" out loud. Riser turns work differently: they change the flight attitude directly through the lines, without part of the canopy briefly becoming less responsive. And harness turns, turns driven by body weight, are the technique every high-performance pilot has mastered — noticeably calmer, keeping your weight centered under the canopy.

Pulling a toggle brakes one side of the canopy while the other keeps flying — the canopy turns toward the braked side. The advantage: with toggles you can stop, turn sharply and even fly backward into a stall in an emergency, all at once. The downside: right after the pull there's a window where the canopy is less immediately responsive — exactly what you need to plan for.
The front riser pulls the leading edge of the canopy into a steeper angle — increasing both speed and stored energy. Unlike a toggle, the entire canopy stays actively flying throughout, without that brief response gap. That's exactly why the front riser is the tool used to initiate swoops — more on that in this series' guide to the swoop course.
Rear riser input also turns without the toggle's typical response gap, but it can bring the canopy into a stall far more abruptly when used to flare than a toggle flare would. That's why the rule is clear: practice rear riser landings many times high above the ground before applying them low.
With a harness turn you shift your weight in the harness without moving toggle or riser at all. The result is a noticeably calm, balanced turn that keeps your weight centered under the canopy — every high-performance pilot uses this technique, usually combined with toggle or riser input.
Start with the flat turn — a controlled turn at normal flight speed with minimal altitude loss. Next comes the flare turn: a turn during the flare that you start at 5 to 10° and build gradually up to 45° — never with a big jump in between.
Each of these techniques belongs first high above the ground, with clear abort altitudes, before you apply them low on final approach. Rear riser flares carry a particularly high injury risk if done incorrectly — repetition before speed is the rule here.
Film yourself from the side while practicing flare turns. Most pilots underestimate how much altitude they actually lose until they see it on video — what you feel in the air and what's actually happening often differ widely at first.
Toggles brake one side differentially and briefly create a response gap, but turn very versatilely — including stopping and stalling. Riser turns change the flight attitude directly, without that gap, and the entire canopy stays actively flying throughout.
They carry a higher injury risk than toggle flares because the canopy can stall more abruptly. That's why you should practice them many times high above the ground before applying them low.
At 5 to 10° — and only build gradually up to 45° after many clean repetitions. A big jump in between is one of the most common mistakes inexperienced pilots make.
Because they're noticeably calmer and more balanced than pure toggle or riser turns — your weight stays centered under the canopy. Almost every high-performance pilot combines harness input with one of the other two techniques.
