If formation skydiving is flown belly-to-earth — why do teams exist that build exactly the same formations upside down? The honest answer: that's Vertical Formation Skydiving (VFS), officially FS's vertical sister, not the same thing as freefly.
VFS works like a four-way FS jump — except every teammate flies head-down or head-up instead of belly-to-earth. The core principles stay identical: fixed dive pool, grips, scoring system, judges. Only the body orientation flips entirely.
The crucial difference from freefly: freefly is the far more open discipline, where jumpers switch freely between back, head, sit and stand positions, usually individually and without a fixed formation requirement. VFS teams, by contrast, build exactly planned formations in a head orientation, just like FS teams do belly-to-earth. So VFS is FS with a flipped body axis, not freefly with formation rules.
VFS 4-way was officially recognized by the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) as part of international competition, with its first FAI World Cup appearance in Eloy, Arizona, in October 2008. One technical detail makes VFS more demanding than classic FS: no grip line may cross another grip line within the same formation — a rule that doesn't exist in this form for belly-to-earth FS, because body geometry works entirely differently head-down.

Head-down formations fall noticeably faster than belly-to-earth ones — that changes reaction times and the dynamics of approaching and separating quite a bit. A team switching from FS to VFS should factor in that higher speed explicitly, rather than simply reusing the same distances and timings as belly-to-earth.
As with any group discipline, separation before deployment is mandatory — and at the higher fall speed, arguably with even more buffer than the minimum rules set for belly-to-earth FS. Discuss that extra buffer explicitly as a team instead of silently assuming everyone agrees on it.
If your team wants to fly both FS and VFS, practice the switch between orientations deliberately — not just each discipline on its own. That exact transition, from belly to head and back, is often where teams lose the most time in mixed-formation competitions. Practicing that switch in isolation often wins more time than flying faster within a single orientation ever could.
