The short answer: your first wingsuit should be small — on purpose. That sounds backwards when you picture the huge wings from online videos, but the opposite is what keeps you safe. Beginner suits are deliberately compact, because beginners can lose control — and a small suit is far easier to recover than a big one.
Manufacturers roughly split wingsuits into three performance classes: beginner, intermediate and high-performance suits, plus three size classes from small to large. One widely used rule of thumb puts hard numbers on it: 200 jumps before a wingsuit is even on the table; 350 jumps with 100 in a beginner suit before moving to an intermediate model; 450 jumps with 100 in an intermediate suit before a high-performance wing. These numbers aren't bureaucratic ritual — they map how much practice your body genuinely needs to handle more surface area.
Small suits end the arm wing roughly at hip height and the leg wing around the knee or shin. Medium suits run the arm wing roughly to the feet, with the leg wing extending further to match. Before buying, try borrowing a few different beginner models from experienced pilots or at events if you can. Wingsuits feel noticeably different by brand despite similar size labels — and your build matters more for fit than any spec sheet.
