The survival curve drops fast: how to run beacon search, probing and digging correctly — and why you never wait for organized rescue to arrive.
How much time do you really have if your partner disappears in an avalanche? The honest, hard answer: far less than you think - and you almost always have to run the rescue yourself, not the rescue service. Survival chances exceed 90% in the first 15-20 minutes after burial, but then drop sharply to about 35%, and fall further to roughly 25-28% beyond 35 minutes.
The reason for this drop: oxygen deprivation under the snow. That same time window is also why organized rescue (helicopter, mountain rescue) almost never arrives fast enough in a real emergency - by the time the call goes out and a team is on-site, often 30-60 minutes have already passed. That's why: companion rescue by your own group is the only realistic chance of rescue. It's not the emergency call that saves your life - it's your own search in the first minutes.
That's exactly why beacon search training isn't an optional extra - it's the single most important skill in freeriding, more important than any turn.
Once the avalanche has stopped and there's no further danger to you, everyone in the group switches their devices to search mode. Note the point last seen - the last place you saw the buried person - as your starting point for the search.
Move systematically across the debris with your beacon in a search strip about 20-30 meters wide until you get an initial signal. Then follow your device's direction indicator while the distance reading continuously decreases.
Once the distance reading drops to around 10 (meters), deliberately slow to walking pace - running here often means overshooting the actual position. Now guide the device close to the snow surface in a cross pattern.
Once the beacon has brought you to the narrowest point, probe systematically in a spiral pattern before you start digging. That prevents digging in the wrong spot and losing precious minutes.
Don't dig straight down over the probe tip - that costs strength and time. Instead, start slightly downhill from the probe and dig at an angle toward the find spot, so you can efficiently move snow downward instead of constantly piling it back over yourself.
Before starting the search, always secure the situation first: is there further avalanche danger for the rescuers? Is the group itself still at risk? A second buried person from careless action helps nobody.
Place an emergency call as soon as the situation allows (ideally by one person while others keep searching) - but never wait for organized rescue before starting your own search. The time windows are too short for that.
Practice the full search chain - signal search, coarse search, fine search, probing, digging - regularly under time pressure, not just relaxed in the backyard. Stress changes how well you think under pressure; only behavior trained under realistic time pressure holds up in a real emergency.
