What is surf foiling, and why do you fly above the wave instead of on it? How it differs from shortboard, windfoil and kitefoil — your honest introduction.
Is this still surfing, or already flying? The honest answer: a bit of both. Surf foiling replaces the classic fins under your board with a hydrofoil — once you have enough speed, the whole board lifts off the water's surface. You're no longer gliding on the wave, you're hovering roughly half a meter above it, with only the slim mast staying submerged.
Here's the trick: a foil needs far less energy from the wave than a normal board. Just 6 to 7 knots of speed — about the pace of a brisk push-off on a bike — is enough to lift off. That's why a foil catches waves far too weak or too far out for a shortboard, sometimes even waves that never properly break.
An important distinction from the neighboring disciplines: windfoil and kitefoil use a sail or a kite as their power source, with the foil being just the lift component under a completely different piece of gear. Surf foiling draws its energy exclusively from the wave itself — through paddling and wave power, with no sail or kite at all, exactly like classic surfing.
Compared to shortboard and longboard, the difference is bigger than the shared word "surfing" suggests: the weight distribution when popping up almost reverses, rides get noticeably longer at 250 to 300 meters on average — a good three football fields in a row — and underneath the board waits a completely new risk in the form of sharp metal edges.
Train Smart. Play Hard. — in surf foiling that means: learn to stand stable on the spot first, before you fly past the wave itself.
A mast hangs under your board, and at its end a fuselage (the connecting rod) carries the front wing and the smaller stabilizer. Once water flows over the front wing fast enough, lift is generated — exactly like an airplane wing, just with water instead of air. As speed rises, the foil lifts the entire board clear of the water.
In windfoil and kitefoil, a sail or a kite delivers all the propulsion; foil flight in both is "just" the lift component of a bigger system. In surf foiling that external power source is absent: you paddle yourself into the wave, exactly as in classic surfing. More demanding physically, but purer and less dependent on wind.
On a normal board, most of your weight sits on the back foot when standing up, to engage the fins. On a foil it's almost the reverse: beginners start with around 80% of their weight on the front foot, and only with growing experience does the ratio shift toward 60/40. Anyone who doesn't consciously unlearn the old reflex gets practically catapulted backward off the foil.
Most beginners learn lying down and paddling, exactly like surfing, just with a foil instead of fins. Some schools additionally offer a tow assist to give you the first sense of lift without needing wave timing. Check with your foil school which path suits your background.
Good foil coaches tow you on calm flat water first, so you practice balance, foot pressure and steering before a wave even enters the picture. Skip this step and you tackle two challenges at once — wave timing and foil balance — which costs unnecessary falls.
Underneath your board, the mast and wings hold sharp metal — contact can cause deep lacerations. Keep more distance from other water users than you're used to in classic surfing, since the foil is barely visible underwater. Detailed fall technique and gear follow in the next guide.
Rent a complete set with a long fuselage and a big front wing for your first sessions instead of buying right away. That combination forgives mistakes best, and your ideal setup changes fast in the first weeks as your skill grows.
For most people: yes. You have to master wave timing, a new weight distribution and balance on a narrow, moving hydrofoil all at once. Confident surfers get a head start, but shouldn't underestimate the curve.
