The honest answer to the "how": a freeze is largely strength and balance, not bravery. Force it instead of carrying it and you land right in the typical breaking risk — shoulder and wrist are an issue for over half of breakers.
Freezes are among the movements that load the upper body the most. That's no reason to avoid them — on the contrary: a clean freeze is one of the most satisfying moments in breaking. But it demands preparation: core and shoulder strength first, then the technique.

### 1. Strength base: core and shoulders first Before you hold a freeze, you have to be able to carry your weight. Build planks, support variations and shoulder stability. Structured strength training measurably improves dance qualities — in a freeze, strength isn't an add-on, it's half the battle.
### 2. The baby freeze The entry-level freeze. You place both hands, one knee rests on the elbow of the same side, and the head gives a third contact point — a tripod support. That spreads your weight over three points instead of two, which makes it stable and learnable. Hold two seconds first, then build.
### 3. The chair freeze The baby freeze becomes the chair freeze when you lift the legs into the air "chair-like" and balance on one hand and the elbow braced into the hip. It demands more core tension and is the bridge to many further freezes.
### 4. The shoulder freeze The shoulder freeze shifts the weight onto shoulder and head instead of the wrist alone — for many the more wrist-friendly variant. Pay special attention to a controlled neck position here; once the head carries weight, the rule is: slow, and never in fatigue.
Freezes put a lot of weight on wrist, shoulder and partly the head — exactly the breaking problem zones. So: always practise warmed up and with strengthened wrists, on a mat first, then on a hard floor. If your strength gives out, abort the attempt instead of "toughing it out".
In the shoulder freeze, control the neck deliberately; uncontrolled head contact is no trifle. Repeated wrist loading is also one of the most common sources of complaints in breaking — pain or tingling in the fingers is a stop signal, not a training stimulus.
Separate strength day and freeze day. Practise the pure hold of a freeze on a day with fresh muscles, and build your strength base on another day.
Many people fail not at the technique but because they squeeze in freezes "quickly" at the end of an exhausting session — that's exactly when the contact points shake and the injury waits. A freeze practised fresh is a freeze learned.
### How long does it take to learn a freeze? The baby freeze is holdable for many within 2–4 weeks if core and shoulder strength are there in parallel. Chair and shoulder freeze take longer because they demand more balance and strength. Progress depends less on bravery than on your strength base.
### Why do I keep toppling over in the baby freeze? Usually because you're balancing on two points instead of three, or placing your weight too far back. Use the head as a third contact point, bring the weight controlled forward over the hands and brace the core. Balance is a matter of practice — everyone topples at first.
