Floor work is core to contemporary dance but loads wrists and the lower back heavily. How to distribute your weight safely and protect both.
"Why does my wrist hurt more after floor work than my legs do?" Because you're probably falling and bracing wrong — not because floor work is inherently dangerous. Floor work is one of the clearest differences between contemporary and most other dance styles: the floor isn't the exception, it's a constant training partner.
The honest challenge here: contemporary increasingly shifts body weight onto the upper extremity — wrists and shoulders carry noticeably more load during floor transitions and inversions (handstand-like positions) than in most other dance forms. That's exactly why wrist and shoulder problems aren't rare in floor-heavy modern styles.
Your lower back takes a hit too: a weak core combined with a hard floor makes the lumbar spine absorb more shock than it should. A good floor is therefore not a detail, it's injury protection — a real sprung Marley floor absorbs part of that load, hard concrete or tile doesn't.
The good news: floor work is learnable like any other technique. It's not about courage, it's about clean weight distribution.
You never land on the floor with full weight on a single joint. Spread the contact over a larger surface — forearm instead of just wrist, side of the thigh instead of knee. More surface means less pressure per point.
The difference between controlled floor work and a fall is the rolling motion: instead of stopping abruptly, you let the energy continue over a rounded back line. That spreads the impact over time instead of a single moment.
When you brace with your hands, keep the fingers spread and the wrists as neutral as possible instead of maximally hyperextended. Build wrist strength alongside it (e.g. with forearm-support variations) — that's prevention, not an add-on.
Pull yourself up using your abdominal and back muscles, not a single push from one arm. That takes load off both wrists and lower back and is usually simply the more controlled, elegant movement anyway.
Barefoot floor work causes friction at first — that's normal, not really an injury. Over time, thicker, protective skin forms on elbows, knees and feet. Until then, long sleeves or knee pads help during intense phases.

Film yourself going down and getting up from the side. Most beginners only notice on video that they land on a stiff wrist instead of a broad surface.
A trick from pro training: practice the transition to the floor completely slowly, almost in slow motion. Whoever controls the movement cleanly in slow motion automatically finds the right weight distribution again at speed later.
