The run decides your finish time — yet it's rarely trained under race conditions. How brick sessions specifically prepare your legs for the feeling right after the bike.
Why do your legs feel like someone else's for that first kilometer after cycling — heavy, numb, uncoordinated? The honest answer: because your nervous system and muscles don't automatically handle the switch from cycling to running load — you have to train it deliberately. That's exactly what brick training is for: combined sessions of cycling directly followed by running, with no meaningful break in between.
Why does this matter so much specifically for Olympic distance? Because the data is clear: the run separates fast from slow athletes more than any other leg — finishers around 2:12 hours ran at 94.0% of maximum heart rate, slower ones at only 87.0%. That gap isn't created by better running form alone, but by the ability to call on high intensity right after the bike — exactly the scenario pure, isolated run training never replicates.
At 40 km of cycling followed by 10 km of running, the window for the switch is short: unlike at 70.3 or Ironman distance, where legs can "run themselves in" over many kilometers before pace matters, at Olympic distance you have to perform almost immediately. At 40 to 70 minutes, the run is simply too short to allow a long adjustment period.
Train Smart. Play Hard. — for brick training that means: the training stimulus that feels most uncomfortable is also the one that pays most directly into your finish time. Don't avoid it, plan it deliberately.
One combined bike-run session per week is entirely sufficient as a base stimulus (see also the training guide in this series). More isn't automatically better — the adaptation needs repetition above all, not excess.
Switch from bike to running shoes as fast as realistically possible — a long break between bike and run doesn't train what you'll experience on race day. Deliberately simulate the rush of the real transition zone.
The first minutes after the bike almost always feel harder than they actually are. Go by your target heart rate instead of subjective effort, or you'll unconsciously start too slow or too fast.
Train brick runs after both easier and intense bike sessions. On race day you won't know how depleted those 40 km really left you — having prepared for both scenarios pays off.

Brick training combines two endurance efforts with no real recovery break — that's a genuine cardiovascular load. Build intensity up gradually instead of starting at maximum pace in both disciplines right away, especially if you're new to this training format.
Pay special attention to footing and coordination in the first running minutes after the bike — the unfamiliar leg feeling briefly raises fall risk, for example when crossing curbs or uneven terrain.
Note after every brick session how many minutes it took before your legs felt "normal." That number drops noticeably over time — and it's a more objective progress indicator than pace alone.
A trick from coaching practice: occasionally schedule a double brick — short bike, short run, back on the bike, run again. This repeated switching trains the neuromuscular adaptation even more specifically than a single transition.
