Beach volleyball injures less than indoor volleyball, but shoulder and back take longer to heal. How to protect yourself in the sand.
The honest answer: beach volleyball injures you less often than indoor volleyball — but when it happens, you're out longer. A comparative study of NCAA players found 1.8 injuries per 1000 hours in the sand versus 5.3 indoors — the soft surface measurably protects you.
The reason lies in the biomechanics: sand lowers peak ground reaction force on landing by around 8% compared to hard flooring — the force spreads over more time and distance, which especially spares the knee and ankle. That's exactly why the knee is hit less often in beach volleyball than indoors: 7.6% versus 16.7% of all injuries.
But sand shifts the risk, it doesn't eliminate it. The most common sites in sand are the shoulder (15.3%) and lower back (13.5%) — the logical result of each of only two players per team hitting far more serves and attacks per set than an indoor player sharing the load with five teammates. The abdominal muscles are also hit more often in sand than indoors (11.8% versus 4.7%) — likely due to more explosive trunk rotation on jumps from an unstable surface.
And recovery time? It's longer in sand exactly where injuries happen less often: a knee needs on average 24 instead of 11 days in beach, the lower back 25 instead of 17 days, the shoulder as much as 52 instead of 28 days. If it gets you in the sand, take the time it actually needs.
Because these two regions are hit most often in sand, they deserve their own warm-up: rotational shoulder work, dynamic trunk mobilization before every serving session.
Sand lands softer, but the instability places extra demand on the Achilles tendon and calf muscles — build up jump and sprint volume over weeks, not single sessions.
Sunscreen before play, not after, plus a hat — sand itself already reflects 25% more UV radiation than other surfaces. Drink regularly, especially once the sand surface hits over 50°C.
The lower back is one of the most common problem zones in sand — often triggered by the many overhead actions in 2v2 combined with the rotational trunk load of jumping from an unstable surface. Early mobility work and trunk stability prevent it.

Because sand's instability demands more from the ankle and Achilles tendon than firm ground, eccentric calf exercises belong firmly in your athletic program — especially before the season starts, when the body isn't yet used to the sand.
The good news first: sand is objectively easier on the joints during landing compared to hard indoor flooring — that measurably lowers your overall risk. The bad news: shoulder, lower back and abdominal muscles are more exposed in sand, likely because each player performs far more repetitions of these movements without rotation or specialization.
Take heat seriously: at sand temperatures above 50°C, the risk of heat exhaustion rises alongside the pure injury risk. Schedule drinking breaks deliberately, not only once you feel thirsty.
Build rotator cuff exercises (external rotation with a light resistance band) firmly into your week, even off-season. Because the shoulder is the most common injury site in sand and, at 52 days on average, also causes the longest time out, prevention here is by far the cheapest investment you can make.
