Honest heads-up: you never need this guide at a cable park, because a computer runs the course. Behind the boat, though, whoever's at the wheel shapes your wake at least as much as you shape your own technique. A well-driven boat hands you a tall, consistent wave. A poorly driven one takes away your shot at a clean trick, no matter how good you are.
The most important rule sounds almost too simple, yet gets ignored constantly: drive straight. Every course change temporarily alters the wake's shape and height – a straight line held to a fixed point on the horizon is the foundation for everything else. On top of that comes the target speed for wake-building: roughly 32 to 40 km/h (20–25 mph) – noticeably more than the Tempo-30 zone beginners start with, but still well under highway speed.

Pick a fixed point on shore before starting and steer straight at it instead of constantly correcting course. Every turn temporarily changes the wake or nearly kills it – a consistent wake only comes from a consistent line.
Rest your elbow firmly on the armrest and control the throttle with fine finger and thumb movements instead of your whole arm. Jerky throttle inputs throw the rider off balance – they feel every bit of unsteadiness the moment they enter the wake.

If you feel the boat briefly slow as the rider cuts into the wake, feed the throttle back in smoothly to hold your target speed – always slow and predictable, never a single hard jab.
Even while focused on the wake, always keep the rider, other boats, and obstacles in view – that's what the observer is for, but final responsibility for the course rests with the driver. Never drive faster than the rider's skill and the visibility on the water allow, even if a higher speed would theoretically build a better wake. And: trim and ballast changes affect the boat's overall handling – test new settings first on calm, open water.
Rotate roles regularly as a team: whoever usually just drives should occasionally get behind the boat themselves. Nothing sharpens your feel for "what actually makes a good wake" like experiencing it firsthand – and you'll drive noticeably more attentively afterward.
