### 1. Check the forecast twice Check the forecast the evening before AND again on-site the morning of the tour — mountain weather changes fast, and local sources like a hut or valley station are often more current than a generic app forecast.
### 2. Plan early, not late In the Alps, summer storms typically build in the early to mid afternoon. Start early enough to be at the exit, or at least clear of the most exposed part of the route, before that critical window.
### 3. Know your exit options Find out in advance where emergency exits are located along the route. If a storm builds before you reach the hardest section, you can head straight for the nearest exit instead of continuing to the regular end.
### 4. In an emergency: stay clipped in If a storm catches you mid-wall anyway: stay clipped into the set, move as calmly and briskly as possible to the next safe point, and do not unclip in a panic. Avoid lingering on exposed peaks or ridges.
Wet conditions deserve their own mention: a rain-soaked steel cable and damp rungs noticeably change friction, even without any storm at all. What is a secure grip when dry becomes a slip risk when wet — reduce your pace accordingly and deliberately test each foothold before fully shifting your weight onto it.
The best strategy against storms on a via ferrata is avoidance, not reaction. As soon as storms are forecast for the day, postpone the tour or pick a shorter route with an early exit. Once you are clipped to the steel cable in exposed terrain, your options are limited — plan so that you never end up in that situation in the first place.
Actively watch the sky throughout the tour, not just at the start. If cumulus clouds are already towering by mid-morning, that is often an early sign of afternoon storms — better to turn back or pick up the pace than to trust this morning's forecast blindly. Also ask at the hut or in the valley the evening before for a local read — experienced hut wardens and mountain guides often read the sky more precisely than any app.
