"I already know the general windsurfing safety rules — what's different in freestyle?" Answer: the injury pattern shifts radically upward. While relaxed windsurfing mostly affects the foot, knee and ankle, competitive and professional windsurfers show a different picture: over 50% of all injuries hit the upper body — compared to roughly 18.5% among recreational riders without competitive ambition. Almost a threefold jump.
Why? Because exactly the elements that define freestyle — grip changes under load, airborne rotations, landings through the sail rather than the legs — load the upper body in ways relaxed cruising never does. A comparative study on competitive wave/slalom windsurfers even found almost twice as many injuries per year as recreational riders (2.0 vs. 1.2 per person per year), with shoulder, upper arm and elbow making up 41% of all upper-body soft-tissue injuries there.
The good news: that's not a reason to avoid freestyle — it's a reason to prevent it deliberately, instead of relying on the generic rules built more for relaxed cruising.

If you keep hanging onto the boom during a fall to hold the sail's pull, it can cause an anterior shoulder dislocation — a known injury mechanism in windsurfing. When in doubt, let go. A wet head is safer than a dislocated shoulder.
Catapult-style falls — where the board stops abruptly while your body keeps moving — are among the most common fall mechanisms in windsurfing overall. That exact mechanism shows up especially often in freestyle sliding moves, for instance a fin catch during a Spock. Keep your arms close to your body during a fall rather than bracing with them.
Before every session, dedicated warm-up for the shoulder and rotator cuff muscles pays off — exactly the structure working hardest during loaded grip changes. A cold, unprepared upper body is noticeably more vulnerable during rotations.
Only increase jump height and rotation speed once balance and landing are reliable at your current level. Most upper-body injuries don't happen on the first careful attempt, but when ambition outruns technique.
The jump from roughly 18.5% to over 50% upper-body share of injuries isn't a footnote — it's the central difference between relaxed windsurfing and freestyle. So build shoulder and core stability actively into your training, not just raw trick repetition. Practice new rotations first in moderate wind with plenty of space from other water users, since a botched trick can send you off your line unpredictably.
Make it a rule: better to let go one moment too early than one moment too late. Many shoulder injuries come from the reflex to "save" the sail. Deliberately train yourself to release the boom instantly in an out-of-control situation — it costs you a bit of gear stress, but saves you weeks off the water.
