Why can't you go deeper in some poses no matter how often you practice? Honest answer: because sometimes it isn't a muscle stopping you, it's your own bone — and that can't be stretched away. Yin teacher Bernie Clark coined a distinction that changes almost every Yin practice: tension and compression.
Tension happens when tissue — muscle, fascia, ligament, joint capsule — reaches the end of its current length. This limit is changeable: with time and repeated, gentle stimulus, the tissue becomes more pliable and the limit shifts. This is the mechanism most Yin effects target.
Compression, on the other hand, happens when one body part meets another and there's simply no more room. Clark distinguishes three levels: soft compression (flesh on flesh, like belly on thigh), medium compression (bone on flesh, like pelvis on thigh in a deep squat) and hard compression (bone on bone). Only the soft version can still shift over time — medium and hard compression are anatomical facts, not training deficits.
That explains why two people in the same Dragon or Saddle can reach completely different depths, even though both are practicing "correctly." The shape of your hip socket, the angle of your femoral neck, the length of your bones — all of that is individual and unchangeable by any amount of dedicated practice.
Train Smart. Play Hard. — in Yin that means: work against tension, make peace with compression.
A pulling, stretching feeling in muscle or connective tissue that eases somewhat over time — that's tension. It often feels "long" and diffuse, not sharply localized.
A sudden, hard stop, often at a clearly locatable spot — knee against chest, heel against glute, pelvis against thigh. This limit feels "hard" and barely changes over the course of a hold.
With tension: continued practice pays off, the limit shifts over weeks. With medium or hard compression: no amount of training volume changes it — here the pose is simply done for you, regardless of your experience.
When you hit compression, that's a signal for props or a variation — not for more effort. A block under the knee in Saddle, for example, reduces the compression pressure instead of ignoring it.
Many people experience compression more strongly on one side than the other — that's normal and comes from slight anatomical asymmetries, not uneven training.
The biggest risk in Yin often shows up right here: when people mistake a hard compression stop for "not stretched enough yet" and push against it with weight or time. That can overload cartilage and joint capsules. Remember: a sudden, localized stop is a stop — not an obstacle to overcome.
Test yourself with the "pull-back test": move into a pose until you feel resistance, back off an inch, then move back in. If the feeling barely changes, that points to compression. If it noticeably softens, that points more to tension, which responds to time.

If the stop feels diffuse and pulling and softens somewhat over time, it's tension — patience pays off here. If the stop feels hard and sudden and stays the same throughout the hold, it's compression — adapting makes more sense than continued practice.
