The richest reef system on earth: nowhere have more coral and reef-fish species been recorded than here in the Coral Triangle. Among the karst islands you dive, snorkel and paddle in a league of their own — the journey is long, but worth every hour. Homestay instead of resort — more authentic and cheaper.
West Nusa Tenggara · Trekking, Surfing, Scuba Diving · Best time: Apr–Nov
Volcano plus reef in one trip: the multi-day Rinjani trek takes you over the crater rim and up to 3,726 metres, then you recover diving and snorkelling around the Gilis. Tough, cheap, unforgettable. Rinjani 3-day trek — crater lake camping at sunrise.

Sumatra · Surfing · Best time: Apr–Oct
Every experienced surfer's dream: perfect, powerful reef waves in world-class density, reached mostly by charter boat or surf camp. Shallow reef and a long journey demand skill and budget — in return you surf line-ups others only know from videos. World-class reef breaks — usually via boat charter.
Sulawesi · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Nov

Java · Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
Sunrise over the smoking caldera is Java's most famous natural spectacle — and the hike up is surprisingly moderate. You cross the sea of sand to the crater rim and look straight into the active vent. Starting early pays off twice. Sunrise over the volcanic caldera — start early.
Bali · Scuba Diving, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Nov

Add house reefs for easy snorkelling and dive schools with fair course prices. Ideal for your first dives. USAT Liberty wreck diveable straight from the beach.
Bali · Scuba Diving, Surfing · Best time: Apr–Oct
Small island, big programme: reef waves like Shipwrecks and Playgrounds break out front, and dive boats reach the mantas — and with seasonal luck, mola mola — in minutes. Far more relaxed than Bali, yet close enough to it. Mantas & mola-mola in season, reef breaks nearby.
