Issyk-Kul · Trekking, Skiing, Horse Riding · Best time: Year-round
A base town between high mountains and one of the world's largest alpine lakes: in summer you trek to the turquoise Ala-Kul at 3,500 metres or spend days in the saddle, in winter you ride cheap powder at the Karakol ski area. Simple, wild and still astonishingly empty. Ala-Kul trek (3 days) — turquoise mountain lake at 3,500m.
Naryn · Horse Riding, Trekking · Best time: Jun–Sep
High pasture at 3,000 metres, seemingly from another era: on horseback you climb over passes to Song-Kul, sleep in yurts with herder families and wake between herds and drifting mist. No power, no signal — but starry skies and mare's milk. Accessible in summer only. 3-day horse trek over the pass — sleep in yurts.
Issyk-Kul · Skiing, Trekking, MTB · Best time: Dec–Apr
A former mining village reinvented as a backcountry base: in winter guides lead you onto untracked ski-touring slopes, in summer trekking routes and MTB trails take over the same valleys. Guesthouse lodging, fair prices, empty slopes — adventure straight from the source. Ski touring guide from ~€50/day — nobody else on the mountain.
Jalal-Abad · Hiking, Horse Riding · Best time: Jun–Sep
The most extensive walnut forest on earth as hiking ground: from Arslanbob you climb to waterfalls and lookouts, ride through the groves and stay with families in the community-tourism network. In September the village belongs to the walnut harvest — the best time to pitch in. Waterfall hike (3h) + community-based tourism.
Osh · Hiking, Climbing · Best time: Jun–Sep
One of Central Asia's oldest cities at the foot of its sacred mountain: Sulaiman-Too takes barely an hour to climb and leaves you standing above bazaars and the edge of the Fergana valley. Climbers find routes nearby; everyone else, one of the region's biggest bazaars. Sulaiman-Too at sunrise — panorama over the Fergana Valley.
Chuy · Trekking, Mountaineering, Climbing · Best time: Jun–Sep
Bishkek's home mountains: 35 km out of the city and you're at the Alplager trailhead at 2,150 m. The classic is the climb to the Ratsek hut at around 3,300 m — 1,200 vertical metres in 3–4 hours, steep but technically harmless. Want more? The Ak-Sai glacier serves up ice, rock and mixed routes on peaks up to 4,895 m. From the Alplager trailhead (2,150 m) it's about 1,200 vertical metres up to the Ratsek hut — doable as a day trip from Bishkek if you're walking before 8am.
Osh · Mountaineering, Trekking, Horse Riding · Best time: Jul–Aug
From Sary-Mogol in the Alay Valley you head up to Achik-Tash at 3,600 m — base camp for Lenin Peak (7,134 m), the most-summited 7,000er on the planet. The normal route is technically tame; the altitude is not, and acclimatisation runs via Tulpar-Kol and the hike up to the camp at 4,400 m. No summit ambitions? Multi-day horse treks out of Sary-Mogol cover the same scenery. It's 290 km from Osh to the Achik-Tash base camp — a full day's drive, and the last leg across the Alay pasture is 4x4 only.
Naryn · Trekking, Horse Riding · Best time: Jul–Sep
Fjord vibes at 3,514 m: Kel-Suu sits behind the Kok-Kiya valley in the Kakshaal-Too range, right on the Chinese border. From the yurt camp you hike or ride the last kilometres into the gorge, and the lake only opens up behind the rim — you'll only see all of it from a boat. No signal, no shop, just border zone and total silence. The border-zone permit is mandatory and takes about a week — apply in Bishkek or Naryn beforehand, or the checkpoint is where your trip ends.
Chuy · Skiing, Snowboarding · Best time: Jan–Mar
Kyrgyzstan's powder room: a 150 km high valley 130 km beyond Bishkek, cold dry air and up to 2.5 m of snow. You get up there by heli or on skins and ski long, treeless faces — avalanche skills aren't optional here, they're the entry ticket. The window is short: January to March. The only lift for miles sits at the Too-Ashuu pass — one chairlift with 200 vertical metres; everything else you reach by heli or skin track.
Chuy · Horse Riding, Hiking, Rafting · Best time: May–Sep
This valley is Bishkek's weekend release valve: a 2.5-hour drive, then horse instead of car. Guided rides run 2–3 hours through pine forest and river meadows and work fine even if you've never sat in a saddle. Prefer getting wet? Rafting trips run on the Chon-Kemin river in summer. Easy to combine with the Burana Tower on the way out — most day tours from Bishkek run exactly that order.
