The best sport spots and adventures in Netherlands – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Den Haag · Surfing, Kitesurfing, SUP · Best time: Year-round
Holland's surf city beach right by The Hague: beach breaks over long sandbars, a dense scene of schools and board shops, and wind that serves kiters and surfers alike. With a good wetsuit the season runs well past summer. Autumn swells (Sep–Nov) bring the most powerful waves.
Nordholland · Cycling, Windsurfing, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
A Wadden island built for headwind training: dykes, dunes and polders roll by on a dense cycle network that loops the whole island, while windsurfers work the North Sea breeze off the west beach. Seal spotting on the mudflats included. Bring your bike on the ferry — the island is perfect for cycling.
Utrecht · Kayaking, Cycling, Running · Best time: Apr–Oct
Dutch training life at its best: paddle quiet canals beneath the old wharf cellars, run along the water and ride bike paths all the way out to the river Lek. Understated, flat and perfect for base-building sessions. Canal kayak in summer — cooler than Amsterdam and much quieter.
Zeeland · Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, Scuba Diving · Best time: Apr–Oct
Delta country with a permanent breeze: at the Brouwersdam you stand in hip-deep flat water while North Sea waves work outside — an ideal learning curve for kiters and windsurfers. In the Oosterschelde you dive among cuttlefish, lobsters and oyster beds. Brouwersdam — best flat water kite spot in the Netherlands.
Gelderland · Cycling, Hiking, Running · Best time: Apr–Oct
Forest and heath instead of canals: in one of the Netherlands' largest nature areas you run and ride across drifting sands, through pine woods and purple-flowering heather. With a little luck, red deer or wild boar cross your path. Free white bikes in the park — forest and heathland.
Nordholland · Surfing, Kitesurfing · Best time: May–Oct
After Scheveningen this is the coast's second big surf hotspot — just way more laid-back and half an hour from Amsterdam. One of the best peaks in the Netherlands breaks at the Noordpier, rights and lefts over a sandbank, with three surf schools right on the beach. Cold water, yes, but totally doable in a wetsuit — even as a complete beginner. The best waves break just north of the Noordpier — the jetty blocks the southwest wind and shapes stable sandbanks.
Friesland · Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, SUP · Best time: Apr–Oct
It Soal near Workum is THE kite and windsurf spot on the IJsselmeer: a huge standing-depth area, steady wind and statistically more windy days than many coastal spots. Schools like Sky High have been teaching kitesurfing, windsurfing and wingfoiling here for over 20 years. Campsite right behind the beach — get up, check the wind, get on the water. The first 100 metres or so are standing depth — dropping your kite here costs you zero nerves.
Limburg · Cycling, MTB, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
The only real hill country in the Netherlands — and home of the Amstel Gold Race. Cauberg, Keutenberg, Eyserbosweg: short, vicious ramps hitting over 20 percent on the Keutenberg, which chain together into loops of 60 to 120 km. Perfect road-cycling terrain if the rest of Holland feels too flat for you. The Amstel Gold Race 365 loops are permanently signposted — Loop 3 (76 km) takes in both the Cauberg and the Keutenberg.
Nordbrabant · Kayaking, SUP · Best time: May–Sep
Europe's largest freshwater tidal area is best explored by kayak: narrow creeks through the reeds, beaver lodges on the banks, white-tailed eagles overhead. Marked routes from 5 km make it easy to start, and experienced paddlers can string together multi-day trips. Rental kayaks from around 15 euros a day at the visitor centre. This is a genuine tidal area — at low tide some creeks nearly run dry, so check the tide tables before you set off.
Friesland · Sailing, SUP, Swimming · Best time: May–Sep
The lake district around the Sneekermeer is the Netherlands' sailing living room: flat, sheltered water, short legs, harbours and boat rentals everywhere. Ideal for learning dinghy sailing at a sailing school or hopping from lake to lake for a week. Wakeboarding and SUP options on the Sneekermeer come on top. In early August, Sneekweek turns the lake into Europe's biggest inland sailing event — great to watch, but come before or after if you want to learn.
Rotterdam Centrum · Skateboarding, BMX, Inline Skating · Best time: Mar–Oct
A 1,200 sqm concrete landscape in the central median of the Westblaak, built in 2015 to a design by Finnish skatepark architect Janne Saario, replacing the stainless steel obstacles worn out after fifteen years of intensive use. The concrete sits on piles above the metro tunnel, is publicly accessible and is laid out for skateboard, inline, BMX and scooter. The old vert ramp was removed during the rebuild and not replaced here — do not plan Westblaak as your vert session.
