SUP in the Netherlands

3 curated SUP spots in the Netherlands, each with its own note and source.

Scheveningen

Den Haag

You paddle on the North Sea straight off the beach. The surf schools on Strandweg rent board and paddle by the hour, 365 days a year and from age 16; they advise beginners to take a lesson, because the North Sea can be treacherous. The KNRM lifeboat service is blunt: leash on the ankle, buoyancy aid on, and stay ashore in offshore wind — 3–4 Bft already makes SUP demanding.

Sneek / Friesische Seen

Friesland

The official SUP and canoe route through Sneek is a 7.6 km loop through the old-town canals to the Waterpoort; beginners paddle about 3 km/h and need a good 2.5 hours. It starts at the landing stage by Café De Kajuit, with several bridges along the way, nearly all of which a board passes under. Southwest Friesland lists 27 rental stations, several of them in Sneek.

Workum / It Soal (IJsselmeer)

Friesland

On the beach at Workum on the IJsselmeer the surf school rents SUP boards — €10 an hour, €35 a day, during opening hours, from age 6 with a parent along. Wetsuit, leash and vest cost extra. You may take the gear to nearby spots such as Mirns or Kornwerderzand. Rental is at your own risk: in strong wind the IJsselmeer is no place for beginners.
