Spots in Czech Republic

Adršpach

Königgrätz · Climbing, Hiking · Best time: May–Sep

A labyrinth of sandstone towers where climbing is done the traditional Saxon way — slings instead of bolts and plenty of respect for the soft rock. Non-climbers wander rock corridors that narrow to barely shoulder width. Book boat tour through the gorge in the morning.

Český Krumlov

Südböhmen · Kayaking, Cycling · Best time: May–Sep

The Vltava wraps around the old town in a double loop — you paddle past castle and brewery and down small weir chutes that briefly spike your pulse. Afterwards, easy cycling through South Bohemia's rolling hills. 3h kayak tour from Vyšší Brod — relaxing and beautiful.

Prag

Prag · Cycling, Running · Best time: Apr–Oct

Prague as a training ground, not a tour stop: run across Charles Bridge almost alone at dawn, then let the bike carry you on panoramic loops over the city's hills. The Vltava embankments make perfect tempo runs — flat, long and atmospheric at night. E-bike tour via Letná Park and Vyšehrad — the local route.

Böhmische Schweiz

Ústí · Hiking, Climbing, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Oct

Sandstone wilderness just across the Saxon border: deep gorges, the Pravčická brána rock arch and quiet ravines you travel by rowboat and on foot. Trails are well marked but long — plan proper day stages, not strolls. Edmund Gorge boat ride — magical in morning mist.

Šumava

Plzeň · Kayaking, Cycling, Cross-country skiing · Best time: May–Sep

The Bohemian Forest is Czechia's quietest outdoor corner: paddle the young Vltava for days through woods and meadows, with empty bike paths and moorland trails all around. In winter it turns into one of the country's best cross-country ski areas. Vltava canoe from Vyšší Brod — 2 days on the river.

Böhmisches Paradies

Liberec · Climbing, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct

The Hruboskalsko rock city is Czechia's second major sandstone climbing area after Adršpach: towers up to 55 metres like Kapelník and Maják, climbed old-school with rings and knotted slings instead of cams. Non-climbers hike the 7.5 km trail right through the towers and gorges of the UNESCO geopark. After rain, climbing on the soft sandstone is banned for 48 hours — plan your rest days around it.

Riesengebirge

Königgrätz · Hiking, MTB, Skiing · Best time: Jun–Sep

Czechia's highest range, topped by Sněžka (1,603 m) — up high you walk ridge trails along the Polish border, down low the Elbe spring and Mumlava waterfall wait. From Špindlerův Mlýn the cable car hauls your bike up Medvědín, and in winter this is the country's biggest ski area. The Medvědín cable car in Špindlerův Mlýn carries bikes — the trails start right at the top station.

Mährischer Karst

Südmähren · Hiking, Cycling, Cave tours · Best time: Apr–Oct

Czechia's biggest karst area, half an hour north of Brno: in the Punkva Caves you descend to the floor of the 138-metre Macocha Abyss, then ride a boat out along the underground river. Between the caves, bike paths and hiking trails link the gorges — a perfect active day trip. You exit the Punkva Caves by cable car — then stroll back to Skalní mlýn through the dry valley.

Singltrek pod Smrkem

Liberec · MTB, Cycling · Best time: May–Oct

Around 80 kilometres of hand-built flow trails on the northern slopes of the Jizera Mountains, designed by Welsh trail guru Dafydd Davis — IMBA rated the network among the world's best ride centres, a first in Europe. Four difficulty levels plus rental, bike wash and pump track: even complete singletrack rookies get rolling here. The trail centre sits right on the natural swimming lake in Nové Město pod Smrkem — last lap, then straight into the water.

Sázava

Mittelböhmen · Kayaking, Whitewater · Best time: Apr–Sep

The Czechs' classic paddling river, an hour from Prague: you drift past forests, campsites and Český Šternberk castle in a canoe or kayak, with riverside pubs as stage goals. At higher water the Stvořidla rapids become the country's toughest whitewater stretch — otherwise it's all mellow flatwater. The Stvořidla rapids only really run on spring water levels — in summer the Sázava is a relaxed beginner river.
