Spots in USA

Pipeline, North Shore

Oahu, Hawaii · Surfing · Best time: Nov–Feb

Surfing's most famous wave breaks over shallow lava reef just metres off the beach. In winter the line-up belongs to the world's elite — for everyone else, the sand is front-row seating. Nov–Feb for big waves, only watch as a beginner!

Yosemite Valley

Kalifornien · Climbing, Bouldering, Hiking · Best time: May–Oct

Climbing's granite sanctuary: El Capitan and Half Dome have defined what's possible on rock for decades. You don't have to rope up to feel it — world-class bouldering and waterfall hikes make the valley huge at every level. Mist Trail to Vernal Fall as intro — Half Dome needs permit.

Moab

Utah · MTB, Climbing, Canyoning · Best time: Mar–Oct

The MTB mecca, full stop: slickrock domes, desert trails and descents running from alpine heights down into the canyon. In between, splitter cracks to climb and slots to rappel — Moab is an outdoor operating system, not a town. Whole Enchilada Trail (50 km) — Moab's most legendary ride.

Jackson Hole

Wyoming · Skiing, Snowboarding, Hiking · Best time: Dec–Apr

Steep, deep, uncompromising: Jackson Hole means couloirs, big-mountain terrain and backcountry access straight off the lift. Beginner runs exist, but the reputation comes from up high — Corbet's Couloir waits as the test of nerve. Teton Pass for backcountry, avy gear mandatory.

Grand Canyon

Arizona · Hiking, Rafting, Trekking · Best time: Mar–Nov

A mile deep, with rock nearly two billion years old: whether a day hike below the rim or a multi-week rafting expedition on the Colorado, the canyon punishes carelessness and rewards preparation. Secure permits early; take the heat seriously. Bright Angel Trail — apply for permit months ahead.

Huntington Beach

Kalifornien · Surfing, SUP · Best time: Year-round

'Surf City USA' holds the title officially: kilometres of beach break with waves for every day, surf schools by the pier and a scene that lives the sport like almost nowhere else. Beginner surfing in California rarely gets more consistent. Beginner surf lessons from ~$80 — always waves at the pier.

Santa Cruz

Kalifornien · Surfing · Best time: Year-round

A cold-water classic with history: at Steamer Lane long point-break waves peel beneath the cliffs, and a surf museum in town recalls the sport's mainland-US beginnings. Thick neoprene on, respect for the locals packed. Steamer Lane — point break with several peaks, wetsuit essential.

Lake Tahoe

Kalifornien / Nevada · Skiing, MTB, SUP · Best time: Nov–May

An alpine lake, American style: in winter a dozen ski areas ring the shore; in summer you paddle crystal water and ride the trails high above it. Two complete sport seasons in a single place. Winter powder, summer glassy lake — year-round sport.

Zion

Utah · Hiking, Climbing · Best time: Mar–Nov

Hiking with a thrill guarantee: chains guard the ridge-top path to Angels Landing, and in the Narrows you wade for kilometres up a river between 300-metre walls. Both classics need planning — and steady nerves. Angels Landing needs a permit — hike the Narrows through the river.

Red Rocks

Nevada · Climbing, Bouldering · Best time: Oct–Apr

A sandstone playground on the edge of Las Vegas: hundreds of multi-pitch routes and boulders in red-banded rock, from moderate classics to testpieces. Desert climate means the winter half-year is prime climbing time. Sandstone multipitch 20 min from the Vegas Strip.

Bend

Oregon · MTB, Climbing, Skiing · Best time: Year-round

Volcano country, fully equipped: hundreds of kilometres of flowy MTB trails, the crags of Smith Rock — birthplace of American sport climbing — and ski days on Mt. Bachelor. All wrapped in a town wired entirely for the outdoors. Volcano country: trails, Smith Rock & Mt. Bachelor combined.

Maui / Peʻahi

Hawaii · Windsurfing, Surfing · Best time: Year-round

Maui's north shore is windsurfing's powerhouse: at Hoʻokipa trade winds meet reef waves, and just along the coast Jaws breaks as a big-wave venue of international standing. Watching is no shame here — it's the plan. Hoʻokipa for windsurfing, Jaws for big-wave pros only.

Aspen

Colorado · Skiing, MTB · Best time: Nov–Apr

Four mountains, one pass, one myth: from mellow cruising at Snowmass to the steeps of Highland Bowl, Aspen covers it all. In summer, bike trails and the hiking routes to the Maroon Bells take over. Four ski areas on one pass, Maroon Bells in summer.

Outer Banks

North Carolina · Kitesurfing, Surfing · Best time: Apr–Oct

America's kite classic: the flat, waist-deep sounds behind the barrier islands form one huge learning pool, with ocean-side waves waiting for your next step. Reliable wind and plenty of space — ideal for properly learning to kite. Cape Hatteras — flat sounds for kiting, waves outside.

Bishop

Owens Valley, Kalifornien · Bouldering, Climbing, Hiking

North of town lies the Volcanic Tableland, formed from Bishop Tuff — rock created, according to the BLM, by the Long Valley Caldera eruption 750,000 years ago. The BLM lists the Happy and Sad drainages along the Inyo–Mono county line, roughly seven miles north of Bishop, as bouldering terrain, reached via Chalk Bluff Road or Pleasant Valley Dam Road. The BLM and the local climbing community have developed a shared climbing management philosophy that protects the natural resources while preserving climbing access. Most climbers camp at Pleasant Valley Pit Campground: 8.5 miles north on US 395, then 0.5 miles along Pleasant Valley Dam Road, 75 sites, USD 7 per night (card only), no potable water, no hook-ups, 14-day maximum stay. Bring water for the whole day: the BLM states there is no potable water at Pleasant Valley Pit, and the nearest supplies are twelve miles south in Bishop.

Hueco Tanks

El Paso County, Texas · Bouldering, Climbing, Hiking · Best time: Oct–Apr

Three low mountains of igneous rock in the Chihuahuan Desert: about 35 million years ago magma pushed upward and cooled beneath a limestone cover that wind and water later stripped away. Access is tightly managed. Texas Parks and Wildlife admits a maximum of 70 people per day to the self-guided North Mountain area; every other area requires a guided tour, booked at least a week ahead on (915) 857-1135. An orientation video is mandatory before self-guided access and before camping, and returning visitors must watch it once a year. Day entry is USD 7 for adults, free for children 12 and under. Hours are 8am–6pm Oct–Apr, and May–Sep Fri–Sun 7am–7pm, Mon–Thu 8am–6pm; the park regularly reaches capacity on winter weekends. Reserve the self-guided North Mountain permit up to three months ahead on (512) 389-8911 — only 70 people per day are admitted and the park regularly fills up on winter weekends.

Joe's Valley

Emery County, Utah · Bouldering, Climbing, Hiking

The BLM Price Field Office counts over 188 bouldering sites and 9.7 miles of social trails at Joe's Valley. The blocks sit west of Orangeville along Highway 29, between the San Rafael Swell to the east and the Manti-La Sal National Forest to the west; alongside the New Joe's sector the BLM names the Left and Right forks. The rock is sandstone: Joe's Valley Climbing & Community, the non-profit that maintains trails together with the USFS, BLM and Emery County, explicitly asks people never to climb on wet sandstone and links to local weather cameras for that purpose. Camping is on BLM sites: New Joe's Campground with 13 sites and Cottonwood with 10, USD 15 per night, 14-day limit, 50 percent discount on senior passes. Check the weather cameras linked by Joe's Valley Climbing & Community before you drive out — the organisation explicitly asks climbers to leave wet sandstone alone.

Olympic Valley (Western States Trail)

Sierra Nevada, Kalifornien · Trail Running, Hiking · Best time: Jun–Oct

The Western States Trail runs 100 miles from Olympic Valley at 1,890 m to Auburn: 4,740 m of climb and 7,002 m of descent. The first 7 km gain 780 m to Emigrant Pass at 2,667 m, then the route drops into deep canyons in old gold country on paths that go back to 1850s mining tracks. The organiser lists temperatures from about −7 °C to over 43 °C and dry stretches of over 8 miles (roughly 13 km); it rates the American River ford at mile 78 ("Rucky Chucky") as dangerous and explicitly warns against crossing it on training runs. Much of the course is reachable only on foot, by horse or by helicopter. The race is held on the last full weekend in June with a 05:00 start. The canyons hold dry stretches of over 8 miles (about 13 km) and afternoon heat above 43 °C, so start training runs at first light and carry at least two hours of water.

Leadville

Rocky Mountains, Colorado · Trail Running, Hiking · Best time: Jun–Sep

The Leadville Trail 100 is an out-and-back over 99.7 miles from Leadville; its low point sits at 2,806 m and its high point at 3,818 m on Hope Pass. For 2026 the organiser lists 4,071 m of ascent. Surfaces are forest trail, some mountain road and the technical Colorado Trail. The limiter is not gradient but altitude — the whole course lies above 2,800 m, and on Hope Pass thin air becomes the real opponent. Held in August. The whole course sits above 2,800 m, so sleep at least three nights in Leadville before taking on a long run over Hope Pass.

Newport (Narragansett Bay)

Rhode Island · Sailing, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Nov

Newport sits on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, with the sailing centred on Fort Adams. The 636-mile Newport Bermuda Race starts there every two years in June, most recently on 19 June 2026. The city runs the harbour seasonally: driftway dinghy storage is available 1 April to 30 November, the Maritime Center provides showers, Wi-Fi, coin laundry, ice and restrooms for crews, and the pump-out boat answers on VHF 09. Crews without their own dock head for the Maritime Center — showers, laundry and Wi-Fi are there for boaters; call the pump-out boat on VHF 09.

Mammoth Mountain

Kalifornien / Eastern Sierra · Snowboarding, Freestyle, Skiing · Best time: Nov–May

Summit at 11,053 ft (3,369 m), a season the operator states as running from early November into May, plus around 300 days of sunshine a year by its own account. The Unbound Terrain Parks comprise ten separate parks across more than 100 acres, with over 100 jibs, up to 40 jumps on a given day and two halfpipes, including a 22-foot pipe in the Main Park. The operator grades them by ability: beginner in the Disco, Wonderland and Eagle playgrounds; intermediate in Chair 3 Park, Forest Trail and Carousel Park with its bowls, spines, hips and volcanoes; advanced in Snake Run, Jibs & More and South Park; expert in The Hemlocks and the Main Park. Work through the operator's grading: the Disco, Wonderland or Eagle beginner playgrounds first, then Chair 3 Park and Forest Trail as the step up, and only then the Main Park with its 22-foot pipe — that one is rated expert terrain.

Mount Baker Ski Area

Washington / North Cascades · Snowboarding, Freeride, Skiing · Best time: Dec–Apr

688 inches of snow on the 15-year average (about 17.5 m); in the 1998/99 winter 1,140 inches (28.9 m) fell, the world record the operator claims. Base areas sit at 4,300 ft (Heather Meadows) and 3,500 ft (White Salmon), the high point is the top of Chair 8 at 5,089 ft, and the vertical rise is 1,500 ft. Around 1,000 acres are served by eight quad chairs and two handle tows. The event calendar leans snowboard: Banked Slalom 19–21 February 2027, TIMBRRR! Best Trick in December, Last Stand Rail Jam on 3 April and Raven's Edge Dual Slalom on 10–11 April. Entry for the February Banked Slalom runs through the separate event site lbs.mtbaker.us rather than the ticket window, and with 688 inches a year falling on a 4,300 ft base, pack waterproof gear rather than just warm gear.

Stockbridge

Berkshires, Massachusetts · Yoga, Meditation, Ayurveda

Kripalu is a non-profit retreat and education centre on more than 40 hectares in the Berkshires, focused on yoga education for five decades. Alongside overnight retreats and day passes it runs its own schools of Yoga, Ayurveda, Integrative Yoga Therapy and Mindful Outdoor Leadership. Arriving by coach, book Lenox as your drop-off — there is no shuttle from downtown Stockbridge, and Uber or Lyft are unreliable in the Berkshires.

Central Park

New York · Running, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Jun & Sep–Nov

Two loops in one park, two surfaces. The Stephanie and Fred Shuman Running Track circles the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir over 1.58 miles (about 2.5 km) between 86th and 96th Street; bikes, strollers and dogs are banned and all traffic moves counterclockwise. Right next to it the Bridle Path runs 1.66 miles (about 2.7 km) on dirt and gravel — built for horses, closed to bicycles and far easier on the joints. Combine both and you get a good 5 km without a single traffic light. The reservoir track is counterclockwise only — start the other way and you face oncoming traffic the whole lap; switch to the Bridle Path right beside it for long runs.

Flagstaff

Arizona · Running, Trail Running, Hiking · Best time: May–Oct

An altitude camp at 2,100 m, inside the 2,000–2,500 m band sport science treats as the useful range for altitude training. From Buffalo Park the trails run on into the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, the Coconino National Forest and the Arizona Trail; track work uses a 400 m outdoor track and a 300 m indoor track, backed by a 50 m pool and strength facilities. Since tracking began in 1996, athletes who trained here have taken more than 390 Olympic medals. In summer the Flagstaff Summer Running Series adds races at around 7,000 ft (2,135 m). Take the first two or three days easy and start on the trails out of Buffalo Park — at 2,100 m your usual paces stop working immediately.

Seattle Center Skate Plaza

Seattle Center, Washington · Skateboarding, Street skating · Best time: Apr–Oct

An 18,000 sq ft street plaza in public right-of-way along Thomas St between 5th Ave N and Taylor Ave, opened in September 2021. Built by Grindline Skateparks and keeping the glass wallride from the 2009 park, it was deliberately designed to give beginners room to practise. The plaza spans a public alleyway with skating on both sides — approach only one side and you miss half of it.
