After your own offensive rebound the shot clock resets to just 14 seconds, not the full 24. Only a change of possession earns a fresh 24-second clock.
The rebound drops into your hands and it feels like the possession is starting over. It isn't. After your own offensive rebound the clock runs from 14, so that no team can camp on the ball through repeated second chances. The classic mistake is not panic but calm at the wrong moment: you set up your usual action and the horn goes halfway through it. Experienced players therefore count actions rather than seconds — after a rebound there is realistically room for two, one pass and one shot. One distinction that often gets lost: a defensive rebound does not trigger the 14. That is a brand-new possession and gets the full 24; the short reset belongs only to the team that already had the ball.
