Santa Catarina · Best time: Year-round · All levels
Praia Mole and Joaquina break powerfully on E, SE and S swell and are for intermediates upwards — Mole adds strong rips and crowds. Anyone starting out should surf Barra da Lagoa, with soft waves and surf schools, or the Pico section at Campeche, where the walls are friendlier.

Bahia · Best time: Year-round · All levels
Tiririca, right in town, is Itacaré's most frequented break: short, fast, hollow waves that stay consistent almost year-round. At normal size it works for beginners and intermediates — but rocks sit on both sides and cross-currents drag towards them. Once it goes overhead, the peak belongs to very experienced surfers only.

São Paulo · Best time: Year-round · All levels
Itamambuca, some 15 kilometres north, is the benchmark: a powerful, fast and often hollow river-mouth right that runs 4 to 8 feet on south swell from April to September — intermediate and up. Praia Grande in town has several peaks for all levels, while Vermelha do Norte breaks fast and hollow and is strictly for advanced surfers.
