Surfing in Mexico

4 curated Surfing spots in Mexico, each with its own note and source.

Puerto Escondido

Oaxaca · Best time: Apr–Oct · All levels

Zicatela is a sand-bottom beach break that stands up steep and hollow and peaks at unpredictable spots: heavy, fast, expert territory — above all on the May-to-September south swells. La Punta at the southern end throws fast lefts over rock and needs intermediate skills at minimum. If you're learning, head to Carrizalillo bay, where the surf schools work.

Sayulita

Nayarit · Best time: Nov–Apr · Beginner

A sandbar beach break right in front of town with slow, soft waves — that's where the surf schools work, and it gets packed in winter. To the right a long right-hander suits intermediates and up, and at the river-mouth end a fast left runs a long way. The bay faces north and filters S and SW swell; the strongest waves come October to April.

Todos Santos

Baja California Sur · Best time: Nov–Mar · All levels

The surf isn't in town but on the beaches around it: Cerritos, 15 minutes south, is a sandy beach with peaks for every level, though reef sits underneath at its southern end. San Pedrito breaks over cobblestone and is off-limits at low tide; La Pastora, north of town, is a reef break for intermediates and up. Winter NW swell brings the size, double overhead at Cerritos.

Zipolite / Oaxaca

Oaxaca · Best time: Apr–Oct · All levels

An exposed beach break with lefts and rights that works on south to southwest swell with a northerly offshore. The wave isn't the problem, the current is: Zipolite is notoriously rippy, people need pulling from the water almost daily, and sharks are listed as a hazard. Only paddle out if you can read currents — and go early, the wind wrecks it by mid-morning.
