Quetzaltenango · Best time: Nov–Apr · Advanced
From Xela, Santa María is a single day out: about 10 km and 1,300 m of climbing to the 3,772 m summit, leaving the Xela office at 5 a.m. The path runs through pine forest, and below the summit sits the active Santiaguito vent. Bring stamina — the gradient never really eases off.

San Marcos · Best time: Nov–Mar · Advanced
Two days, roughly 15 km and about 1,200 m of ascent and descent: day one climbs through pine forest to a 4,000 m base camp with tents, day two summits before sunrise at 4,222 m, the highest point in Central America. Warm gear is mandatory at that altitude, not a comfort item.
