Why do figure skaters spend weeks practicing nothing but circles? The honest answer: because every jump and every spin starts or lands on a clean edge — and without that foundation, everything else wobbles.
A blade doesn't have one edge but two: an inner and an outer one. Skate straight and you balance on both at once; the moment you go into a curve, you commit to one edge — and that exact choice is what the edge system describes with a simple four-letter code: direction (forward/backward), foot (left/right) and edge type (outside/inside). LFO means left-forward-outside, RBI means right-backward-inside.
From this code grow the two most important basic transitions: the three-turn and the mohawk. Both change your direction of travel, but in different ways — and both are the foundation from which jumps later take off and spins later center. Train Smart. Every edge has a name built from direction, foot and edge type: F/B for forward/backward, L/R for left/right, O/I for outside/inside. This sounds like jargon at first but quickly becomes everyday language in training — your coach says "RFO" and you instantly know which foot, which direction, which edge is meant.
Skate large, slow circles forward — outside first, then inside, on both feet. You feel the edge because the blade traces a slightly curved line into the ice instead of a straight one. Skate "flat" on both edges at once and no clean arc forms — that's exactly the difference a coach's eye catches instantly.
The three-turn is a turn on one foot that changes both direction of travel and edge simultaneously — a forward-outside edge becomes, for example, a backward-inside edge. There are eight three-turns in total — one combination for every direction, foot and edge. The three-turn is usually the first one-foot transition beginners learn.
A mohawk also changes direction, but with a foot change instead of an edge-and-direction change on one leg. You step from one foot to the other instead of turning on the same foot. For beginners the mohawk often feels easier, because balance briefly stays spread across two feet.
Every jump has a takeoff edge — the loop jump, for example, starts on a backward-outside edge, the toe loop on a backward-outside edge with toe-pick assist. An unclean edge now means an unstable takeoff later. Invest the time here and you save many times that time when learning jumps.
Transitions like three-turns and mohawks briefly shift your weight onto a single, rotating point — exactly where beginners tip over most easily. Practice slowly on large circles first, before picking up speed.
Keep wearing thin gloves at this stage, since losing the edge triggers a reflexive fall onto the hands. And: exercises with direction changes make you more prone to colliding with other skaters — pick a quiet corner of the rink for your first attempts.
