A large video analysis of 16 international competitions between 2021 and 2023 counted a total of 1,505 falls across more than 18,600 starts — an average of around 94 falls per competition. Sounds like a lot, but relative to the number of races it's only a fall rate of around 8 percent of starts.
Important context: most of those falls — almost 61 percent — are group falls, where several skaters go down together, usually through contact in the corner. Pure solo falls from a lost edge make up the smaller share at around 35 percent. And of the falls the Canadian team experienced in the same period, only roughly one in fourteen actually led to a reportable injury — a fall and an injury are two different things.
When a real injury does happen, an analysis of German national squad athletes shows a clear pattern: around 70 percent of all injuries affect the lower extremity, above all the knee (just under 21 percent) and ankle (almost 20 percent). Overall, the frequency of medically treated injuries is manageable: around 0.53 cases per 1,000 training hours — translated, that means even with intense, near-daily training you statistically won't hit a serious injury before more than a full year of training.
A second reason for reassurance: lacerations, once the discipline's boogeyman, have dropped significantly thanks to better protective gear — from around 10 to 11 percent of all injuries down to only about 4.3 percent today. The sport has demonstrably gotten safer over the years, not wilder.
The corner is risk zone number one, because skaters enter it at top speed and most group falls happen there. That's why board padding is built softer in corner areas than on the straight, where firmer padding allows a controlled bounce-off.
When a fall is imminent, one thing matters most: protect your head and try to slide away in a controlled way instead of bracing rigidly. You train this reaction deliberately in safe practice situations, not for the first time in a real race.
Because head and neck injuries are rarer than lower-extremity injuries but weigh heavier when they do happen, the helmet is mandatory every session, not up for debate.
Knee and ankle are by far the most affected — usually from the extreme lean and load in the corner, not from spectacular falls. A solid warm-up routine for knee and ankle stability therefore belongs in every session.
A fall is almost normal in short track — only a fraction leads to a real injury. So measure your progress not by whether you fall, but by how controlled your fall is and how fast you get back up.
Statistically, short track isn't a high-risk sport for serious injury, as long as the gear is right and training volume and intensity are increased sensibly. The biggest danger isn't a single dramatic moment but cumulative load on the knee and ankle over time.
Tell your coach as soon as a joint repeatedly feels unstable or painful — that region is statistically the most affected, and early intervention often stops a small irritation from turning into a real injury layoff.
After training, consciously reflect on how your falls felt: was the reaction controlled, or did you brace rigidly? This kind of self-observation is one of the most underrated ways to lower fall risk over time, with no extra strength training required.
