How many sets per muscle per week are optimal? MEV, MAV and MRV as a steering system – so you stimulate enough without running yourself into the ground.
The uncompromising answer: optimal volume is not a fixed value but a corridor between your minimum stimulus and your recovery ceiling — for most muscles the productive range sits at around 10–20 hard sets per week. Below that too little happens, above it fatigue eats the gains.
The evidence behind it is clear: more volume means more hypertrophy, but on a flattening curve — each extra set counts less than the one before. On average we are talking about 0.4 % more muscle thickness per extra set — worth a lot at the low end, nearly free at the top.

The MEV is the smallest set count that still makes a muscle grow — for many groups practically around 8–10 sets per week (practice), backed by evidence that around 10 sets is the point from which hypertrophy is reliably maximized. Below MEV you maintain at best, you do not build. This is where you start each cycle.
The MAV is the zone where you get the most per set — roughly the 12–18 set range (practice), where the dose-response curve still clearly points up before it flattens. You spend most of your mesocycle in the MAV by working up from MEV in small steps.
The MRV is the ceiling: the set count from which you no longer recover and performance drops — for many muscles practically around 20+ sets (practice), because above the corridor the extra benefit is minimal and fatigue dominates. Reach the MRV and strength and reps fall despite more work — the signal to deload.
Run your volume as a wave: start at MEV, then add 1–2 sets per muscle per week until you scrape the recovery limit (strength drop, poor sleep). That typically takes 4–6 weeks. Then comes the reset.
After the build wave you halve volume and intensity for one week (practice) — fatigue falls, adaptation catches up (supercompensation). Then you start the next block near MEV again, but often with a slightly higher base volume than last time.
Keep a fatigue traffic light for each muscle instead of just a set count: green (performance rising), yellow (performance stalling, pump fading), red (strength falling, sleep suffering, joints nagging). Keep progressing while green, hold at yellow, deload at red. That light translates the abstract MEV/MAV/MRV marks into a decision you make in thirty seconds every week — autoregulation in its purest form.
The specific set counts are a practice model from coaching, not an RCT result. What the research clearly shows: volume drives hypertrophy on a flattening curve, and around 10–20 sets is the productive corridor. The landmarks are the practical frame on top — useful for steering, but individually adjustable.
For most, the corridor is 10–20 hard sets per week. Start at the low end, work up over 4–6 weeks and measure via performance and recovery where your optimum lies. Smaller muscles and advanced lifters often need more, big compound muscles or stressed lifters less.
By falling performance despite equal or more work: weights and reps drop, the pump fails to show, sleep and mood suffer, joints speak up. Those are the signs you are no longer recovering. Then more volume is not the answer — a deload is.
Practically every 4–6 weeks, once you scrape your recovery limit. A week at half volume and reduced intensity lets fatigue fall while adaptation catches up. Then you start fresh near MEV — often stronger than before the block.
