Straight talk: you program weightlifting in percentages of your 1RM — but as a beginner your 1RM is a snapshot of your technique, not your strength. Exactly why nobody sensible tests a true max early on: your limit is clean execution, not the muscle.
The basic principle: you calculate your work sets as a fraction of your one-rep max (1RM = the heaviest weight you can lift once cleanly). High percentages (85–95%) build maximal strength and neuromuscular efficiency but cost a lot of CNS fatigue and long recovery; moderate percentages (65–75%) allow more volume with less fatigue.
The second quirk: rep counts stay low. Snatch and clean & jerk are technique lifts — as soon as fatigue degrades execution, you train mistakes instead of strength. That's why sets of 1–3 reps dominate.

Plan in 4-week blocks: first more volume at moderate intensity, then less volume at higher intensity, followed by a deload week. That way you steer fatigue instead of being run over by it.
Give yourself 2–4 minutes of rest between sets on the main lifts — explosive lifts need a fresh nervous system. Higher intensities (85–95%) demand more recovery between sessions than moderate ones.
