The honest answer first: kitefoiling isn't a trick upgrade, it's a different sport on the same kite. Instead of gliding on the water, you lift completely off it on an underwater wing — you fly, while your old twintip setup would be sitting on the sand that same day.
And that's exactly the point: a foil only needs around 6–8 knots of wind to carry you, while a twintip usually needs 12–15 knots just to get going. That's not a nuance — it's the difference between a session day and a day watching the flags from the beach with your gear packed away.
The reason is simple physics: the wing under your board generates lift like an airplane wing and pulls the board out of the water. Without water drag, a little pull is enough to build speed — foilers can roughly triple wind speed: 10 km/h of wind can easily turn into 30 km/h of riding with good technique. You're using wind you'd otherwise never touch.

On a twintip you glide on the water surface; on a foil you fly 30 to 60 cm above it, carried by an underwater wing. That changes everything: less friction, more speed for less wind, but also a completely new sense of balance.
What used to be a no-wind day is now a foil day. Your personal sweet spot shifts downward — exactly what makes foiling so appealing at most Central European spots, where strong, reliable wind is rare.
Can you reliably ride upwind, water start with confidence, and hold your own toeside (riding with your back to the direction of travel)? If yes, you're ready. If not, sort out those basics first — they make the foil transition far easier.
The first few times you'll spend more time in the water than flying. That's normal, not a sign of bad technique. Expect several sessions of pure balance and water-start practice before the first longer glides land.
On a foil what counts isn't strength but feel. Small weight shifts have a huge effect, because the mast's leverage amplifies every movement. Steer roughly and you fall. Steer with a light touch and you fly.

Before you even step into the water: practice on the beach. Mount the foil on the board, stand it up, and feel foot position and balance without a kite and without water. Ten minutes of dry practice often saves you a whole frustrating session in the water.
