Bow or hybrid — what actually belongs on a freeride rig? The short answer: for most freeriders, a kite with plenty of depower and a wide wind range, and that's exactly what bow and hybrid kites deliver most reliably.
You can spot bow kites by their flatter, more curved shape with more area in the center — that gives them a large wind range. Their bridle system (a network of lines on the leading edge) and swept-back wingtips deliver near 100 percent depower — you can take almost all the power out of the kite simply by pushing the bar away from you. That makes bow kites the most patient companions in gusts and shifting wind.
Hybrid kites combine this depower technology with the more direct pull of a classic C-kite — a compromise that works for freestyle as well as freeride and, in some cases, even waves. For your first freeride setup, one thing matters most: the kite should carry you in medium wind without overwhelming you in freshening gusts.

A single kite rarely covers a whole season. Two sizes about 2 to 3 square meters apart cover nearly every wind day at most home spots for most freeriders, without you constantly riding at the limit.
Salt water and UV exposure wear down kite cloth and bridle lines — rinse both with fresh water after every session and let the kite dry fully before packing it away. Check the bridle lines regularly for wear, especially at the knots, since your depower safety depends on exactly those points. A bit of care extends your freeride kite's lifespan by years.
An oversized kite in freshening wind overwhelms you faster than you can react. When in doubt, size toward the lower end of your range if gusts are in the forecast, and practice the depower motion often enough that it becomes automatic — in a real emergency there's no time to think it through.
