The honest answer first: good footwork decides your endurance more than strong arms. Stand cleanly on the front points and you don't hang on your arms — and that's the difference between "wrecked after ten minutes" and "a whole pitch in comfort."
There are two basic techniques. Front-pointing (the "German technique"): you face the wall and kick the two front points into the ice — the most direct way to climb steep ground, from about 45° up. And flat-footing (the "French technique"): on lower-angle ice you set the whole foot flat so all the bottom points bite — harder on the ankles, but far kinder to the calves.
By far the most common beginner mistake: raising the heel. Climbers from the gym instinctively stand on their toes as on a small foothold — and raise the heel doing it. In ice climbing that's exactly what tips the front points out of the ice. The fix is counterintuitive but decisive: drop the heel slightly, and the points angle down into the wall and hold.
On flat to moderately steep ice, set the foot so as many of the bottom points as possible bite at once. That often means turning your feet sideways or even slightly downhill (duck or side stance) to keep the sole flat. Hard on the ankles, but your calves will thank you.
From about 45° you face the wall and kick the front points into the ice once, precisely. A short, decisive kick — no re-kicking. The front points plus the first pair of points below them (the "secondary points") carry you like a small step.
Once the point is set, drop the heel slightly until the foot is nearly horizontal. That presses the front points down into the wall instead of levering them out. Keep the heel high and the points shear out — the classic, sudden "foot slips off" moment.
After the kick the foot stays absolutely still. Any wobble or readjusting breaks off the little ice step you're standing on. Stand on it as if it were a real stair — weight on, trust on, no more movement.
Good ice climbers switch constantly: front-pointing on the steep, flat-footing on lower-angle sections and rests. That spreads the load between calves and ankles and keeps you going longer. When you feel the calves burning, find the next flatter spot and set the foot flat.
Crampons are sharp and strapped to your feet — the most common self-injury on ice is tearing open your own pants, gaiter or calf. Move with a slightly wider stance so the points don't snag each other, especially as you tire.
And remember the "don't fall" rule: a blown front point is one of the most common causes of a fall. Drop the heels, kick once, hold still — these three points aren't a matter of style here but fall prevention.
Practice footwork deliberately on the flat before it gets steep — walk around on a flat ice surface and play with the duck and side stance. The steep kick comes faster once your feet can already "read" the ice. Many courses start exactly this way: walk first, climb second.

Almost always because you hold the heel too high. That levers the points out. Drop the heel slightly until the foot is nearly horizontal — then the points press down into the wall and hold. It feels wrong at first but it's exactly right.
Once. A short, precise kick sets the front points; after that you hold the foot dead still. Every re-kick or wobble breaks off the little step you're standing on. If the kick doesn't hold, kick a new spot rather than smash the same one.
Because front-pointing holds your weight over the front points and keeps the calf muscles constantly tensed. The fix is technique, not strength: drop the heels (unloads the calf), flat-foot on lower-angle sections and actively seek rests where you can stand flat.
