Chasing SWOLF tempts you to force the stroke count down with excessively long, power-heavy pulls and hand paddles – that raises shoulder load. Build intensity and paddle use carefully and stop at any front shoulder pain.
A falling SWOLF with a sharply rising heart rate is not pure efficiency gain – watch your effort and schedule recovery instead of optimising every session for the metric.
Use the stroke index as a complement: speed × stroke length. Unlike raw SWOLF, it rewards not dawdling but real efficiency at pace. If your stroke index rises over the weeks, you're objectively getting better, no matter how the day's form feels.
