Why hiking out makes your thighs burn, what blood pressure and your quadriceps have to do with it, and how to learn the technique.
The honest answer first: hiking out isn't a pose, it's an isometric strength exercise that hits your quadriceps almost like a wall-sit challenge — just with wind in your face. You hang your upper body out over the water, feet locked under straps in the boat, and brace your straight torso against the heel. Physiologically that's a quasi-static holding effort in which your thighs do most of the work.
That also explains why hiking out feels so different from jogging or cycling: during simulated dinghy sailing over 20-minute upwind legs, blood pressure climbs to around 172/100 mmHg — a range otherwise reached only in hard strength training, well above your normal resting value of roughly 120/80. At the same time, pure oxygen consumption stays moderate, comparable to brisk walking — your circulation isn't sprinting, but your leg muscle gets isometrically clamped off, almost like under a blood pressure cuff. That's what explains the characteristic burn.
The good news: this fatigue resistance is trainable and measurably pays off. In one study of sailors, maximum isometric quadriceps strength alone explained 57.8% of fatigue resistance — which in turn explained 46.5% of the sailing level reached. Translated: stronger thighs fatigue slower, and sailors with stronger thighs demonstrably sail better in the end.

You shift your body weight as far outboard as possible to counter the tipping moment of the wind in the sail. Your torso stays as straight and long as possible, knees slightly bent, feet locked under the straps. This is pure lever physics: the further out your weight sits, the more counter-moment you generate — without it making you faster the way running would.
Sit sideways on the gunwale, feet under the straps, upper body stretched as far outboard over the water as possible — head slightly raised, eyes forward toward the sail and your heading. Keep your back straight, not rounded, or you load the spine instead of the legs.
Toe straps must sit neither too tight nor too loose: too tight and you can't get far enough out; too loose and your feet slip through the moment it gets hard. Set them so your calves are held firmly but not painfully when you're fully stretched out.
Don't hold the position maximally stretched the whole time — instead pulse gently with the gusts: go further out in strong gusts, come in briefly and unload your legs in lulls. That spares your quadriceps, which fatigues faster during sustained holding because of the restricted blood flow than during dynamic movement.
On double-handed dinghies with a trapeze, the wire eventually takes over part of the holding work from your legs — more on that in the trapeze guide. Until then, pure hiking remains your most important source of power against the wind, especially on single-handers without a trapeze.
Hiking out is an isometric load with a noticeable blood pressure spike — get a medical check first if you have known cardiovascular issues. Build up hiking time gradually instead of jumping straight into full sessions.

No. The necessary strength and fatigue resistance develop through sailing itself. Start with shorter hiking phases and build up duration instead of overdoing it on day one.
Hiking out uses pure leg strength to hold your body weight at the gunwale; on a trapeze, a wire takes over part of that holding work so you can stand further out and stay stable longer. Trapezes only exist on boats built for them.
