The most obvious difference is deck shape. Freestyle decks are symmetrical with two equally tall kicktails — nose and tail look and behave identically. That's called bidirectional or "twintip": you can ride the board in either direction without anything feeling different, which is exactly what makes chaining tricks fluidly possible, no matter which end is currently the front.
Trucks and wheels differ noticeably from street too. Trucks are roughly one size narrower than the deck — on a 7.25-inch deck that's about 7.0-inch-wide trucks, just narrow enough that the axle nut doesn't stick out sideways and get in the way during rail tricks. Wheels run at 97A to 101A hardness — roughly as hard as a bowling ball compared to an eraser: they slide more predictably and give a clear, calculable feel for balance tricks instead of sticking to the ground.
The goal of the whole setup is always the same: maximum control and predictability through every spin, every stand, every weight shift — not maximum grip through a corner.
On a regular street board, the nose is usually shaped a bit differently from the tail. For freestyle that's a drawback: because you constantly switch between both ends — in a casper, a rail stand, a spin — the board has to feel exactly the same in both directions. A symmetrical deck with identical nose and tail angles makes exactly that possible.
Smaller decks around 7.25 inches sit lighter for footwork; bigger ones around 7.4 inches give more pop for ollie-based tricks. For starting out, the middle is a good compromise. The wheelbase — the distance between the trucks — on freestyle decks usually runs around 29 to 35 cm, noticeably shorter than many street or park boards, which makes tighter spins easier.
Trucks one size narrower than the deck cover the axle nut better — handy for rail stands, where that exact edge takes the load. Stiffer bushings make the board less wobbly while balancing, at the cost of some maneuverability during normal riding. For freestyle, that's the right trade.
97A to 101A is the range most freestyle riders sit in. Harder wheels slide more controllably — important for wheelies, rail slides and spin tricks where you need to know exactly how the wheel will slip. Soft wheels, by contrast, stick to the ground and make exactly those tricks unpredictable.
Assemble your setup and test simple base movements first: rolling, kickturns, a standing kicktail balance check. Does the board really feel the same in both directions? If so, your setup is ready for the first real freestyle tricks in the next guide.
A badly set up board is itself a fall risk: bushings too soft let the board wobble uncontrollably during balance tricks, and a loose axle nut can tear skin during rail tricks. Check before every session that all screws are tight, and retighten axle nuts once you start practicing rail stands — that's exactly where they take the most load.
Don't buy your first freestyle deck too small. A slightly bigger deck around 7.4 inches is more forgiving early on, because you get more surface to balance on during a casper or rail stand — dialing in to a smaller board comes naturally later, once your balance is solid.
