Fish-scale, skin, or waxable skis? NNN or SNS? The key gear decisions for cross-country skiing beginners, explained without the jargon.
The honest answer first: cross-country skis aren't just small downhill boards. They're narrower, lighter, much longer relative to your body weight – and built completely differently depending on the technique.
A classic cross-country ski is divided into three zones: glide zone – kick zone (grip zone) – glide zone. The middle zone grips the snow during the kick, while the outer zones let the ski run almost friction-free while gliding – two opposite jobs on a single ski.
Three ski types solve that differently: Fish-scale skis have a scale pattern in the kick zone that mechanically stops backward slipping – no waxing needed, but slightly slower gliding. Skin skis use an inset mohair or synthetic strip for grip, quiet and low-maintenance. Waxable skis have a smooth kick zone you prep with grip wax depending on snow temperature (its own guide) – optimal grip and glide, but wax know-how required. For beginners, fish-scale or skin skis are the least complicated choice.
Skating skis need none of that: no kick zone, a fully continuous glide zone, but shorter and stiffer than classic skis, because in skating you push off the edge rather than a kick zone.
Two incompatible binding standards lurk here: NNN and SNS. Boot and binding must match the same system – an NNN boot won't click into an SNS binding. For a few years now, Turnamic/Prolink variants have offered cross-compatibility, but check before buying if you're unsure.
