Splitboard, binding system, skins: Karakoram, Spark R&D and Voile compared, plus how much extra weight you really carry uphill.
Short and honest: a splitboard setup weighs more than a regular board — but you mostly notice it going up, not coming down. Splitboards including bindings usually weigh around 3.2 to 4 kg, regular boards sit closer to 1.8 to 3.6 kg. The difference is roughly one extra water bottle you carry with every step uphill.
The reason for the extra weight is the connection mechanism: pucks, rails and clips that turn two ski-like halves back into one stable board. This is exactly where the three major binding systems on the market differ most — not so much in ride feel, but in transition time and weight.
Karakoram leaves the binding permanently on the board, you just flip it into tour mode — transition time around 60 to 90 seconds once you know the moves. Spark R&D is the most widespread system with the fewest moving parts — simple and robust, marginally slower to switch. Voile is universal: the hardware fits practically any regular snowboard binding, a good entry point if you already own good bindings and want to save money.
For skins, material decides grip versus glide: nylon grips best, is most durable, but heavier and slower gliding. Mohair (angora goat hair) glides more easily and is lighter, but loses grip faster. Mix skins combining both are the common compromise of grip, glide, weight and durability.
Expect around 1 kg extra weight versus a regular snowboard. A carbon board saves back about 0.45 kg versus fiberglass — noticeably pricier but appreciably lighter with every step up.
For fast, frequent transitions: Karakoram (60–90 sec). For robustness and few moving parts: Spark R&D. For a cheap entry with bindings you already own: Voile. Test all three in a rental shop before buying, if you can.
Want to move faster and mostly ride packed, set snow? Mohair. Ride often in changeable, soft conditions and want maximum hold? Nylon. Not sure? Mix skins are the solid default.
Touring boots need a working walk mode — a stiff resort boot slows you down walking and makes every uphill step harder than it needs to be. Check boot and binding compatibility before buying.
Telescoping poles give you balance and rhythm on the climb and collapse to fit your pack. Ski crampons aren't a must to start, but useful once you hit icy or hard traverses.
Check your binding's connection mechanism for wear before every tour — a puck that releases on the descent is a fall risk in open terrain. Also check the skin glue: skins that come loose on the climb cost you time and energy exactly where retreat is hardest.
Rent at least two different binding systems for one tour each before buying. You only really feel the difference between Karakoram and Spark R&D on the mountain, not in the shop — and a wrong binding purchase costs more than almost any other piece of gear.
